NCAA Qualification Release

INDIANAPOLIS (EMUEagles.com) --
The No. 13 Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team received an at-large bid to the upcoming NCAA Championships, today, Nov. 12, the NCAA announced. The honor comes one day after the Eagles took home a fifth-place finish at the very tough NCAA Great Lakes Regional, Nov. 11.

"We are honored to represent Eastern Michigan and the Mid-American Conference at the NCAA Championship," stated Head Coach Sue Parks. "The team did a great job of performing well in all of the big meets throughout the season and we put ourselves in a great position to secure an NCAA bid. It is very exciting to have the opportunity to compete at the very highest level as a team, and we are looking forward to seeing what we can do against the nation's best."

"All of the athletes who have come through our program have helped us get to this point," exclaimed Parks. "They bought into my system and believed in the program and all of those years of development paid off in a big way this season. We're excited to get out there and compete hard for our school, our alumni, and all of the friends of our program."

Although the Eagles have had a number of individual qualifiers, this marks just the second time in program history that the team will compete in the national championships. The only other season that the team qualified was in 1996, when the Green and White finished 22nd.

Despite finishing fifth in the tough Great Lakes Region, the Eagles had a very strong regular season, which helped them receive the at-large bid. Eastern competed very well in a number of national-calaiber meets, including the Commodore Classic, Sept. 17, the Notre Dame Invitational, Sept. 30, and the Pre-Nationals Invitational, Oct. 15.

Led by junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) and a very deep group of harriers, the Eagles will look to continue the trend once again against the top teams in the country. Also receiving at-large bids were Air Force, Brigham Young, Iowa State, Michigan State, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Portland, San Francisco, UCLA, Utah, Wisconsin, and Yale.

The NCAA Championships will be held one week from today, Saturday, Nov. 19, in Terre Haute, Ind.
