Rowing Finishes With Top Times at the Head of the Grand

EMU took first in two of its four races
EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University rowing team headed up the road to East Lansing to compete in the Head of the Grand, hosted by Michigan State University today, Oct. 9. The Eagles raced nine boats throughout the day, and reached the podium in all four races.
Leading the way on the morning was the Novice 8+ and Novice 4+ boats, who both claimed victories in their respective races. Beginning with the Novice 8+, the 'A' boat claimed first in the five-boat race with a time of 13:15, defeating a boat from Grand Valley State by five seconds. The 'B' boat came in right behind with a bronze finish, crossing the line with in 13:41.
In the Novice 4+ race, two EMU boats went up against one from Northern Michigan. The Eagle 'A' and 'B' boats took one-two with times of 13:36 and 15:20, respectively.
The other races run on the day were in the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+ races. Despite not taking first, the Eagles still finished near the top of the leaderboard despite facing some tough competition from the Spartans. In the Varsity 8+ race, EMU 'A' took third after a solid time of 12:23, finishing behind boats from MSU and GVSU. The 'B' boat was not far behind, taking fifth with a 13:07 time.
Finally, in the Varsity 4+, the Eagles raced in a talented field with 12 boats total, including three from Eastern. EMU's 'A' boat ended up finishing a respectable fourth behind three boats led by the Spartans, with a time of 12:59. The 'B' and 'C' boats turned in solid times of 13:15 and 14:02, good for seventh and ninth, respectively.
"It was a good day, we put at least one boat on the podium in all but one of the races we entered," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "It was an especially good day for the Novice placing 1st and 3rd in the Novice 8 and 1st and 2nd in the Novice 4. We are going to be getting back to work this week to get our speed up for the Head of the Hooch."
The Eagles return to the water in two weekends when they head back to East Lansing for some races with the Spartans, Saturday, Oct. 22. Their next main competition will come in just under a month at the Head of the Hooch event in Chattanooga, Tenn. The two-day event runs from Saturday, Nov. 5 through Sunday, Nov. 6.
