Two First Half Goals Lead Soccer to 2-1 Win Over Bowling Green

10/6/2016 9:10:00 PM | Soccer

The win marke the Eagles' first conference victory of the season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team rode a two goal first half to victory Thursday night, Oct. 6, at Cochrane Field against Bowling Green State University. EMU (3-8-2, 1-4-0 MAC) used a 16-7 advantage in shots to top the Falcons (7-6-0, 2-3 MAC), 2-1.

The Eagles took it to the Falcons immediately, ultimately coming away with an early goal. Corralling the ball in the midfield, senior Gabrielle Mancini (Troy, Mich.-Troy) sent a cross over the top of the BGSU defense to sophomore Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name). Running down the delivery, Davis took a touch and hammered it home to give EMU a 1-nil lead in the eighth minute.

After keeping the Falcons defense busy, EMU doubled its lead in the 32nd minute. Using her speed to carry the ball up field, freshman Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) delivered a service to the far post where senior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) headed her team-leading fourth goal of the season past the keeper. Tillar's strike pushed the Eagles lead to 2-0 with just under 15 minutes remaining in the half.

For the remainder of the period, the two teams traded chances, but a trio of solid saves by sophomore Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) kept the Falcons scoreless.

Bowling Green cut the Eagles lead in half early in the second, cashing in on a free kick from a few yards outside the 18. After a Falcon hit the ground on a contested play, BGSU's Maureen Kennedy bent a free kick around the wall of Eagles and inside the post.

The 49th minute strike by the Falcons proved to be the last goal of the game, as the Eagles fought off charges by BGSU to hang on for the 2-1 victory.

Next on the docket for the Eagles is a meeting with the University of Toledo at Scicluna Field Sunday, Oct. 9. The match is set for 1 p.m.
