Eagles Emerge Victorious at the Kzoo Classic

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Led by a pair of second-place finishes, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished atop the leaderboard at the Kzoo Classic, Tuesday, Oct. 4. Both junior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) and senior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) tied for second-place with three-round totals of 222 on the par-72, 6,163 yard Moors Golf Club course.
Overall, the victory marked the 20th title in the program's history and first since the Eagles won the Middleburg Bank Intercollegiate, March 31, 2015. It is also the first team championship during Head Coach Pina Gentile's tenure.
Murphy improved greatly upon her second round, concluding the event with a 71 to finish six-over par at 222. The top-five finish marked the sixth of Murphy's career. Beck shot a third-round 78 to also finish at 222, posting her fourth career top-five finish. Behind the duo, sophomore Kritsuda Apiwatthanadol (Bangkok, Thailand-Somtawin Witead Suska Huaymongkhon School) had another solid day, shooting a 78 to finish with a final score of 226 and nab sixth, her first career top-10 finish.
Rounding out EMU's scores were Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) and Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval), who turned in a pair of top-15 finishes. Connelly carded an 80 in the final round to finish 15-over par at 231, tying for 13th, while Guilleux turned in a third round 78 to tie for 15th at 17-over par, 233.
Redshirt junior Brenna Hammond (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Detroit Mercy) shot an 81, wrapping up a 31st-place finish while competing as an individual.
Ball State University finished 18 shots back of the Eagles with a 913 (302-302-309), while Kzoo Classic host Western Michigan University claimed third (313-304-308=925). Ohio's Hailey Hrynewich maintained her hold on the top of the leader board with a one-under par 215 (71-71-73).
The Eagles continue the season next week, Oct. 10-11, at the Rocket Classic in Port Clinton, Ohio.
