ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team posted its seventh consecutive Mid-American Conference dual win Saturday, Oct. 29, topping Ohio University, 178-122. The Eagles won their MAC opener behind a strong overall performance that included wins in 11-of-16 events.
Senior Alexis Mitcheltree (Moon Twp., Pa.-Moon Area), and sophomores Delaney Duncan (Galesburg, Ill.-Galesburg), Dora Vrcic, and Stephanie Johnston put the Eagles in front from the get-go, claiming the top spot in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:42.09, while another Green and White cohort picked up second-place. Freshman Claire Young (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.-Grosse Pointe South), senior Genna Worthley (Portland, Maine-Deering), sophomore Michal Liberman (Rosh Haayin, Israel-Begin), and junior Chase Walker (Virginia Beach, Va.-Landstown(North Florida)) touched in with a time of 1:45.03 to complete the 1-2 punch.
After a third-place finish by sophomore Nicole Swartz (Dayton, Ohio-Centerville) in the 1000 freestyle, the Green and White used a pair of top-three finishes in back-to-back events to distance itself from the Bobcats. Senior Mary Grace Van Allen (Indianapolis, Ind.-North Central) touched in well ahead of the field in the 200 freestyle, claiming the top spot, while fellow senior Sierra Wagner (Huntsville, Texas-Huntsville) rounded out the top three. Then, in the 100 backstroke, Mitcheltree returned to the pool and picked up a first-place finish with a time of 55.22. Meanwhile, Young wrapped up a third-place finish with a time of 55.22.
Moving to the 100 breaststroke, Duncan continued her dominating start to the season, beating the second-place finisher by more than four seconds. The Galesburg, Ill. native won the event with a time of 1:01.32, while Worthley finished third.
Ohio cut into EMU's lead with a sweep of the 200 butterfly, before the Eagles picked up a pair of third-place finishes. Johnston claimed third in the 50 free, while Van Allen touched in with a time of 52.19 to take third in the 100 free.
Mitcheltree and freshman Casey Gavigan (East Setauket, N.Y.-Ward Melville) put Eastern Michigan back on track in the 200 back, providing EMU with a pair of top-three finishes. Mitcheltree completed the sweep of the backstroke events with a time of 2:01.09, while Gavigan rounded out the top-three.
Following Mitcheltree's lead, Duncan turned in her second win of the day in the 200 breast. Finishing more than three seconds ahead of the second-place finisher, Duncan claimed first and remained perfect in the event this season. Worthley added another third-place finish to her day, touching in with a time of 2:22.49, to increase EMU's team lead.
Liberman recorded a win in the 100 fly, her first of the season, leading the field with a time of 56.26, while Vrcic touched in in third.
Junior Alli Shereda (Fraser, Mich.-Fraser) and the divers continued their strong start for the Eagles on the springboard. On the 1-meter, Shereda led a sweep for the Green and White with a score of 265.95. Making her debut, freshman Brielle Johnston (Ottawa, Ontario-Catholique Franco-Quest) finished just behind Shereda to wrap up a second-place with a score of 264.38. Junior Emily Tubbs (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) completed the sweep, posting a total of 262.38 points en route to a third-place mark. Johnston stepped it up on the 3-meter, registering 297.68 points to earn the first top finish of her career. Shereda closed out her day with a second-place finish behind a score of 277.58.
Eastern Michigan closed out the meet with a win in the 400 Free Relay, securing the victory, 178-122.
EMU continues MAC competition next weekend, Nov. 5, against the University of Toledo. The Eagles are set to host the Rockets at Jones Natatorium at 1 p.m.
