YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team fell to the University of Toledo in a home match, today, Oct. 29, inside the Convocation Center by a final tally of 3-0. The Rockets (14-10, 7-5 MAC) were able to improve their attack percentage as the match progressed, while the Eagles (8-17, 3-9 MAC) could not muster much on the offensive end.
Sophomore Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) led the Eagles on the offensive end, posting 10 kills throughout the match. Senior Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio -Shelby) had a nice day as well, hitting at a .389 clip and racking up eight kills. Additionally, freshman Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) totaled 23 assists on the day, while also leading the squad in digs with 10.
Eastern kept things tight in the early goings of the first set, eventually tying things up at 13 apiece. From there, EMU took the lead, but Toledo came right back and tied it again at 16, 17, and then 18. The Rockets then strung together a few points to take a 21-18 lead, but Eastern fought back to tie it at 21. However, Toledo then rattled off four straight points to win the first set, 25-21.
The Green and White then took control of the second set, building a big 7-1 lead through the first eight points. Like the previous set, Toledo responded quickly by picking up five straight to make it 7-6. The score remained tied at eight before the Rockets took an 11-8 lead. From that point on, Toledo built a lead and maintained it through the remainder of the set, going up 19-11 before Eastern halted the run. Despite picking up a few more points, EMU fell in the second set by a total of 25-16.
The third set saw things remain close within the first five points, but Toledo kept their momentum rolling by opening a 10-4 lead. The Green and White managed to pull within four at 14-10, and then again at 16-12, but the Rocket offense proved to be too much down the strech. EMU eventually fell to the Rockets in the third set, 25-13, and lost the match, 3-1.
The Eagles will continue their season next week, traveling to DeKalb, Ill. for a bout against the Huskies of Northern Illinois, Friday, Nov. 4. The following day, Eastern returns to Michigan, and heads to Kalamazoo for a match with Western Michigan, Saturday, Nov. 5.
