The No. 14 Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team recently wrapped up its regular season, and will now turn its focus towards the Mid-American Conference Championships, which take place this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 29, in Kent, Ohio. After winning their first conference title in program history last season, the Eagles will look to repeat this year.

"Our training has been going well since the Pre-National meet, and we feel like we're ready for a strong race," stated Head Coach Sue Parks. "We hope to keep the gap close among our top six runners and continue to move the rest of our pack up. I'm expecting an exciting conference championship among the twelve women's teams."

The Green and White closed out its strong regular season last week with the EMU Fall Classic, Oct. 21. There, junior Danielle Bentzley (Birmingham, Mich. - Seaholm) had a very solid race, leading the Eagles from start to finish, ultimately taking 19th-place with a time of 18:31.2. For her performance, she was named the MAC Runner of the Week, which was the first of her career and the fifth for the team this season.

Behind Bentzley, two more Eagles secured top-50 finishes, as juniors Claire Mesa (Rockford, Ill. - Rockford Lutheran) and Lauren Pottschmidt (Granger, Ind. - Penn) secured 48th and 49th in 19:17.7 and 19:20.9, respectively.

Last season's conference championships saw the Eagles win the first MAC title in program history behind three harriers finishing within the top-six. Alsu Bogdanova (Kazan, Russia - Lyceum #83) had an excellent race, bringing home the MAC individual title after clocking in at 20:39.26 behind a late-race surge. Behind her, Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) nabbed fourth with a time of 20:53.62, while Sofie Gallein (Gits, Belgium - University of Leuven) took sixth after crossing the finish line in 21:09.80.

Bogdanova, McDermitt, and Gallein all claimed First-Team All-MAC honors, which marked the most for EMU since 1996 . Additionally, Parks was named MAC Coach of the Year, which was the second of her career and her first at EMU.

The Eagles will square off with 11 other MAC schools at the meet, including two ranked within the top-15 of the Great Lakes Region, where EMU ranks No. 2. Toledo currently holds the No. 10 spot in the region, while Miami sits at No. 14. In the Midwest Region, Northern Illinois maintains the No. 8 spot, while Buffalo sits at No. 13 in the Northeast Region. Also in attendance will be Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Central Michigan, Kent State, Ohio, and Western Michigan.

The MAC Championships will be held at the Kent State University Golf Course, beginning at 11 a.m. with the women's 6,000-meter race. The men will follow shortly after, as their 8,000-meter race will start at noon.
