Downpour in Buffalo Leads Soccer to Draw Against Bulls

Michelle Rollins scored her second goal of the season

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – Playing through pouring rain and double overtime, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team drew even, 1-1, against the University at Buffalo at UB Stadium, Thursday night, Oct. 20. The Eagles (5-8-4, 3-4-2 MAC) held a 16-10 advantage in shots, putting eight on target in the match, while sophomore Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) posted six saves.

Freshman Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) set the Green and White up well early, delivering a ball to senior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) in the eighth minute. Securing the service, Rollins buried a shot past the UB keeper, providing EMU with a 1-nil edge.

Despite holding a 6-4 lead in first half shots and two fantastic saves by Williams, the Bulls (6-7-4, 3-4-2 MAC) leveled the score in the 24th minute of play, leaving the score even at one at the break.

In the second half, the teams spent the first 25 minutes trading possession in the midfield as the rain continued to come down with the score locked at one.

Redshirt senior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) was thrown to the turf, drawing a foul 15 yards outside the box in the 70th minute, giving the Eagles their first real scoring opportunity of the period. Stepping the free kick, senior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) delivered a solid shot to the post, but Buffalo's keeper secured it despite bobbling it initially. The Eagles came right back moments later as senior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) intercepted a pass in the midfield and fired a shot wide.

With roughly 15 minutes remaining, the Eagles continued to maintain pressure on UB by ways of two corner kicks. EMU's initial corner was headed up in the air before Hirsch blasted a shot that was blocked out for another Eastern corner. On the ensuing corner the Eagles could not piece together a shot and the Bulls cleared the ball the other way.

On the counter, the Green and White fought off the Bulls' attack, but an EMU miscue provided Buffalo with another shot. Ripping a shot through traffic, Williams made the save to keep the draw intact with roughly five minutes remaining in regulation.

Sophomore Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name) fired a shot from five yards outside the 18 with time winding down, but the attempt sailed wide, sending the match to overtime.

The Eagles wasted little time in the extra period, taking it to the Bulls from the whistle as the rain slowed. Beginning with the ball at midfield, the Green and White broke through the UB defense, but Tillar's shot was scooped up by Buffalo's Laura Dougall in the 91st minute.

EMU was in position for another shot five minutes later, but an offsides call ended the chance prematurely. Freshman Maggie McCullough (London, Ontario-Oakridge Secondary) registered the second of EMU's two shots in the first overtime period in the 99th minute but could not sneak it past the UB keeper.

On the heels of a cleared cross, ending another chance for the Eagles, the Bulls earned a corner. Buffalo's service inside the six was blocked out and sent to the foot of a UB player inside the 18. Washburn stepped in to make the save at the goal line near the far post, but her save fell to the feet of another Bull who fired a shot right back at goal. Recovering from the initial corner, Williams fought through a crowded six to make the save.

The Bulls kept the Green and White defense on its toes in the second overtime with a few opportunities on goal, but Williams and EMU stood strong, preserving the 1-1 draw.

Eastern Michigan closes out its MAC East Division road trip, Sunday, Oct. 23, in the Buckeye State. The Eagles travel down to Akron, Ohio for a 1 p.m. match against the Zips of the University of Akron.
