The loss marked the sixth consecutive defeat for the Eagles
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team suffered a heartbreaking, 3-2, loss in double overtime Sunday, Oct. 2, at home against Miami University in Mid-American Conference action. The Eagles (2-8-2, 0-4-0 MAC) fired off 15 more shots and earned 10 more corners than the RedHawks (5-4-1, 2-1-1 MAC) but came up short.
The Eagles midfield controlled a majority of the first half, fueling the Green and White to an 8-3 lead in shots. Unfortunately for EMU, the five-shot advantage did not result in any goals, leaving the match scoreless through 35 minutes of play and allowing Miami to take the lead in the 37th minute. With the defense caught high, the RedHawks played a ball over the top and into the box where Ashley Weathers put it in the back of the net.
Eastern Michigan rattled off a few more chances in the remaining eight minutes but came up empty, taking a 1-nil deficit into the break.
Off the start, EMU took it right at the Miami defense. On the heels of a few scoring chances, senior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) intercepted a pass on defense and began an EMU counter. Cutting through the center of the field, Washburn played a ball to junior Chanel Vani (Brampton, Ontario-Cardinal Leger) on the outside. Working in front of the Eastern bench, Vani took a touch and delivered a sinking cross to the top of the 18 where junior Alex Wilbanks (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Lincoln) fired a shot past the keeper. Wilbanks' goal marked the first of her career and evened the match at one with roughly 35 minutes remaining.
Continuing to test the RedHawks defense, the Eagles broke through for a go-ahead goal in the 74th minute. Freshman Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) delivered a corner service into the box where redshirt senior Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London) ripped a shot that was blocked. The deflection rolled out to the top of the box where senior Stef Barcelos (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcellinus) tucked it inside the near post.
The Eagles' 2-1 lead was short lived as MU responded with a set piece goal of its own three minutes later. Converting on a corner, Miami's answer leveled the match at two.
Over the course of the next 13 minutes, Eastern Michigan maintained constant pressure but failed to secure the game-winner despite outshooting the RedHawks by a 12-4 margin in the frame.
Neither team mustered a shot in the first overtime period as the score stood tied at two heading into the second overtime.
EMU rattled off three shots in double overtime before Miami recorded their first since regulation. The RedHawks' lone opportunity proved to be the difference as Maggie Scott curled a shot in from the endline with 33.3 seconds remaining to top the Eagles, 3-2.
Eastern looks to bounce back from the heartbreaking loss Thursday night, Oct. 7, in Bowling Green, Ohio when the Green and White square off against the Falcons of Bowling Green State University. The match is scheduled for 7 p.m.
