FULL RESULTS

OKLAHOMA CITY (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University rowing team competed in its first meet of the season, Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Head of the Oklahoma. EMU raced three boats throughout the day and saw solid results all around.

In the first race of the day, the Varsity 8 boat competed in the 20-team Women's Collegiate 8+ race. The squad finished in 10th place, which was two spots down from its 2015 finish, but the Eagles improved on their 2015 time of 15:40.81 with a 15:16.302 finish this season.

Following that, the Eagles split the Varsity 8 boat into two Varsity 4's for the Women's Collegiate 4+ Row for the Cure race. Up against 27 other boats, the Eagles took 13th and 23rd place with times of 17:06.531 and 18:42.009, respectively. The Varsity 4B boat dealt with some adversity that led to the 23rd spot, as the boat was slowed down to due to oar clashing.

Finally, the Eagles were scheduled to compete in a trio of night sprints, but bad weather cancelled both Varsity 4 sprints, leaving the Varsity 8 boat the final one to compete. They made the most of the race, taking first place out of five in the Petite Final with a quick time of 1:40.028, defeating boats from Wichita State, Central Oklahoma, and TCU.

"We took a very young squad to the Head of the Oklahoma, anchored by two seniors and seven sophomores," Head Coach Kemp Savage said. "The 8's and 4's were very aggressive and attacked the pieces well. We showed a pretty steady increase in speed from last year and a good result in the Petite Final of the night sprints. Sadly, the weather prevented the night sprints 4's from racing. It was a good trip and we are focused on MSU next weekend."

The Eagles return to the water next weekend for the Head of the Grand event. Competition from East Lansing is set to begin at 9 a.m. and will go all day.
