YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team received one point in this week's Amway Coaches Poll after its 4-1 start to the 2016 season. The Eagles are one of 25 teams outside the top 25 that are receiving votes. The poll is made up of 64 Football Bowl Subdivision head coaches from around the country and all are members of the American Football Coaches Association.
The Eagles are off to their best start in 21 seasons at 4-1 following a 28-25 victory on the road at Bowling Green, Oct. 1, to push the team's winning streak to three.
The recognition marks the first time since 1987 that Eastern Michigan has received votes in a national poll. EMU collected 18 points in the final release of the Associated Press rankings following the then-Huron's 30-27 upset of San Jose State in the California Bowl. Should the poll have carried out further, EMU would have been ranked 31st behind Texas (26), Indiana (27), Pittsburgh (28), Wyoming (29), and Penn State (30).
Alabama stayed at the top spot in the poll following its win over Kentucky, while Ohio State remained in second with the Buckeyes' win over Rutgers. Meanwhile, Mid-American Conference rival Western Michigan slid into No. 25 following its victory at Central Michigan.
The Eagles return home Saturday, Oct. 8, for the school's 96th Homecoming against the University of Toledo. Kickoff against the Rockets is set for 3 p.m. at "The Factory" inside Rynearson Stadium. For the complete list of homecoming events, click here.
