YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind a shutout by sophomore Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) and the Eagles defense, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team came away with a scoreless draw against Mid-American Conference leader Kent State University Sunday, Oct. 16. The Green and White (5-8-3, 3-4-1 MAC) were outshot, 14-9, but held strong for a tie on Senior Day.
Kent State (10-1-2, 6-0-2 MAC) led the way in shots, 7-3, in the first half, but three solid saves by Williams kept the match scoreless through 45 minutes of play.
In the second half, the physical play picked up. Freshman Sabrina McNeill (Whitby, Ontario-Henry Street) drew two fouls on the KSU players, providing the Eagles with a pair of free kicks 10 yards outside the box. Despite fantastic services by McNeill and senior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), the Green and White could not capitalize.
While the Eagles attack kept pressure on the Golden Flashes, EMU's defense held strong. Williams and the Eagles held KSU to four shots in the second half to force overtime with score, 0-0.
Senior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) did her best to get the Eagles on the scoreboard in extra time, putting one shot on goal but it was bobbled then saved by Kent State's keeper. Meanwhile, EMU held the Golden Flashes without a shot in the period, making way for double overtime.
KSU recorded two shots in double overtime but Williams made both stops to maintain the scoreless tie. Eastern's best chance of the frame came with the clock
winding down. Drawing a free kick 10 yards inside of midfield, the Eagles ripped a shot that was deflected out for an EMU corner. On the ensuing set piece, Washburn delivered a cross to the far post but a last second header by senior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) went wide.
Williams finished the match with six saves as the Green and White secured a scoreless draw versus the Golden Flashes. The match marked the second consecutive shutout for the Eagles, marking the first time EMU has posted back-to-back clean sheets since Oct, 26-30, 2014.
EMU celebrated senior day at halftime of the match, recognizing this season's senior class as Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London), Washburn, Hirsch, Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin), Stef Barcelos (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcelinus), Gabriella Mancini (Troy, Mich.-Troy), and Rollins played one of their final home games of their careers.
Eastern Michigan hits the road for the final weekend of conference play, Oct. 21-23, before returning home for its regular season finale, Oct. 27. EMU battles the University at Buffalo Thursday night, Oct. 21, in New York, before traveling to Akron, Oct. 23, for a tilt against the University of Akron. The Eagles' match versus Buffalo is slated for 7 p.m.
