Defense Fuels Soccer to 2-0 Win Over Ohio

10/14/2016 6:56:00 PM | Soccer

Sophomore Kaylin Williams picked up her fifth career shutout in the win

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles) – Defense fueled the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team to a 2-nil victory over Ohio University Friday night, Oct. 14, at Scicluna Field. Senior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) scored the first goal of her career while sophomore Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) made two saves to earn her fifth career shutout as the Eagles (5-8-2, 3-4-0 MAC) recorded their third consecutive win.

Drawing an early foul just inside midfield, Washburn stepped up from her post at center back to deliver the service. Washburn's soaring kick, tucked inside the far post for the first strike of the match, and the first goal of the Hartland, Mich. natives career just 1:10 into the action.

Ohio created a chance for the equalizer in the 10th minute, pushing towards the Eagles backline with numbers. With Williams coming off her line to corral a cross, the Bobcats broke through the EMU defense. Ohio ripped a shot from eight yards out, but senior Stef Barcelos (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcelinus) stepped in and made the save to keep Eastern's one goal lead intact.

Barcelos provided the Eagles with an insurance goal on the other end of the pitch in the 37th minute. Senior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) was taken down in the box, earning the Green and White a penalty kick. Called upon by her teammates, Barcelos trotted up to the 18 and blasted a shot past the Ohio keeper to push Eastern's lead to 2-nil.

Carrying a two goal lead into the 75th minute, the Eagles' withstood a flurry of shots by the Bobcats, to maintain their lead. Clearing the ball after an Ohio shot off the crossbar, redshirt senior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) dribbled the ball up the sideline. Beating the OU defense, Tillar created a 2-on-1 opportunity for the Eagles but sent a shot high.

Ohio came right back at the Eagles on the ensuing goal kick, playing a ball through the Green and White backline in the 86th minute. Undermanned, Williams rushed off her line and laid out for a crucial save just inside the 18.

The timely save by Williams served as the last chance for Ohio as Eastern Michigan earned a 2-nil victory.

Eastern closes out a four-game homestand Sunday, Oct. 16, when the Eagles host Kent State University. The senior day match against the Golden Flashes is slated for 1 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
