YPSILANTI, MIch. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team hosted Bowling Green State University in Mid-American Conference cross-divisional action Friday night, Oct. 14, at the Convocation Center. Hitting woes plagued the Eagles (7-13, 2-5 MAC) as they were swept by the Falcons (14-6, 4-3 MAC).
Sophomore Alyssa LaFace (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park) handled the libero duties, recording a team-high 11 digs, while redshirt sophomore Mallory Rajewski (Midland, Mich.-Midland) added eight. On attack, sophomore Jordan Smith (Solon, Iowa-Solon) led the team with seven kills. Freshman Riley Taylor (Indianapolis, Ind.-Perry Meridian) dished out a team-high 19 assists as the Eagles' primary setter.
The Green and White hit just .030 for the match, while the EMU defense allowed the Falcons to hit at a .344 clip. Defensively, Bowling Green held a 49-37 edge in digs and recorded eight blocks compared to one for EMU. Eastern also trailed in service aces, 13-3.
The two teams traded points in the opening set, fighting to a 15-15 tie. A trio of EMU miscues put the Falcons in front, 18-15, forcing Head Coach Kimi Olson to burn a timeout. Out of the break, the Falcons pushed their lead to five, 22-17, bringing about another EMU timeout. BGSU eventually closed the set with a kill after a pair of errors by the Eagles, taking the set, 25-17.
Trailing in the match, 1-0, the Eagles offensive woes continued. The Green and White hit at just a .065 clip in the second set as the Falcons boasted a blistering .407 attack percentage. Unable to get a timely kill, EMU found itself trailing, 17-5, late in the set. Senior Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio-Shelby) posted four kills to help fuel an EMU comeback, pulling Eastern within eight, 23-15. Despite the late run by the Eagles, a pair of miscues gave BGSU the set, 25-15, and a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the third set, the Falcons jumped out to a 13-1 lead as Eastern Michigan struggled for consistency on attack. EMU chipped away at the double digit deficit, pulling within 10, before falling, 25-9.
The Eagles return to action tomorrow, Oct. 15, against Miami University. The match versus the RedHawks is set for 5 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
