The No. 16 Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team returns to the course this weekend, Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Pre-Nationals Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. The Green and White will square off with many of the top teams in the nation, including four of the top-10 teams according to the most recent United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) coaches' poll.

"This will be a very tough competition with six teams ranked in the top 13 in the NCAA, along with many other strong programs," remarked Head Coach Sue Parks. "We know that we will have to be at our best to finish as high as we want to in this meet. However, our training has gone well and we feel that we have taken some steps forward since our race at Notre Dame two weeks ago. In our last two 5000 meter races, we've moved up significantly at the end of the race, so I feel that running 6000 meters should be an advantage for us. We're excited about racing on the NCAA course, and having the opportunity to compete against some of the best teams in the NCAA."

The Notre Dame Invite, Sept. 30, saw the Eagles build on their tremendous success at the Commodore Classic, Sept. 17, as the squad beat a number of ranked teams, including defending NCAA Champions New Mexico, who were ranked No. 2 in the nation at the time. The Eagles also downed a trio of ranked teams in the form of No. 16 Notre Dame, No. 24 Vanderbilt, and No. 28 Utah. For their efforts, Eastern burst into the national rankings, climbing to No. 16 in the country.

Individually, junior Jordann McDermitt (Davison, Mich. - Davison) continued her excellent season, running to a seventh place finish in 16:33.1, which was a personal-best 5,000-meter time by nearly 24 seconds. Additionally, redshirt sophomore Natalie Cizmas (Clinton Twp., Mich. - Chippewa Valley) also had a fantastic race, turning in a 12th-place finish after clocking in at 16:41.0. Like McDermitt, her time was also a career-best, coming in at a whopping 36 seconds quicker than her previous best.

"Jordann McDermitt and Natalie Cizmas had great races at Notre Dame, and they continue to set the pace for the team," explained Parks. "Our goal is to move the rest of the group closer to them and to keep our 1-5 gap tight over 6000 meters on a tougher course."

This week, Eastern will once again face a number of very strong teams from throughout the nation. The tough field of squads includes No. 2 Colorado, No. 5 Portland, No. 7 Stanford, No. 9 Oregon, No. 12 Arkansas, No. 13 Michigan, and No. 22 Virginia, in addition to a number of teams receiving votes.

The race will be held on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute. The jam-packed day will kick off at 11 a.m. with the women's blue 6,000-meter race, which the Eagles will take part in, after which the men will begin their 8,000-meter blue race at 11:35. Next up, the women's white 6,000-meter race will start at 12:15 p.m., with the men's white 8,000-meter run following shortly after at 12:50. Finally, the day will conclude with a pair of open races, with the women beginning at 1:30 p.m. and the men capping off the day at 2:05 p.m.
