Murphy Turns in Runner-Up Showing at Rocket Classic

PORT CLINTON, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team capped off the Rocket Classic today, Oct. 11, by shooting a third round 302 to finish fifth overall with a total score of 926. Senior Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) had a fantastic day three, finishing with a third-round 69, which was the best among all competitors.
Murphy led the Eastern Michigan contingent, finishing second overall after totaling a 220 (76-75-69). Junior Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) managed to improve on her day-one score by five strokes, shooting a 75 on the final day to finish in a tie for 26th with a 235 (80-80-75). Behind her, sophomore Kritsuda Apiwatthanadol (Bangkok, Thailand-Somtawin Witead Suska Huaymongkhon School) capped off the event with a 79 to tie for 30th with a 237 (82-76-79). Freshman Maria Connelly (Waterville, Ohio-Anthony Wayne) moved up two spots to a tie for 36th after totaling a 239 (75-85-79), while sophomore Penelope Guilleux (Saint Maur Des Fosse, France-Arsonval) rounded out the lineup in a tie for 43rd with a 242 (79-83-80).
Competing as individuals, both redshirt junior Brenna Hammond (West Bloomfield, Mich-Detroit Mercy) and freshman Julia Stevenson (Milford, Mich-Milford) improved on their day-one performances, as Hammond improved by two strokes, while Stevenson was three strokes better than her second round. Overall, Hammond finished in a tie for 57th with a 249 (87-82-80), while Stevenson tied for 63rd after totaling a 253 (84-86-83)
The Eagles will not have a competition next week, as they will next see action at the Pat Bradley Invitational. Action from Florida will take place over a three-day span, Oct. 23-25.
