After winning the doubles point, four of six singles matches were in favor of EMU
LINCOLN, Neb. (EMUEagles.com) – After falling Friday, Jan. 29, the Eastern Michigan University tennis team flipped the script and was able to knock off the United States Air Force Academy, 5-2, Saturday, Jan. 30, in Lincoln, Neb. The Eagles (2-3) won the doubles point before taking four of the singles matches.
In doubles play, EMU's No. 1 squad dropped a 6-2 decision as Andrea Martinovska and Klara Supejova fell to AFA's Elizabeth Barnickel and Mary Meyers. Although the No. 1 team fell the No 2 and 3 squads picked up the slack as Marie Mayerova and Ani Gogvadze teamed up to take down Chloe Forlini and Jocelle Rudico, 6-3, in the No. 2 spot. In addition, Renu Sharma and Anna Veleva defeated Lily Forlini and Elisa Nelson, 6-4, to give EMU the one point lead heading into singles action.
Supejova returned to form in singles play, making quick work of Meyers, 6-1, 6-1, in the No. 1 spot, while Gogvadze knocked off Lily Forlini, 6-4, 6-0, in the fourth singles slot. Sharma and Veleva each won in the fifth and sixth spots. Veleva defeated Rudico in two, 6-3, 6-1, while Sharma won a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (9) in the No. 6 position. Both of EMU's singles losses went to tiebreakers.
"Good win today," stated Head Coach Ryan Ray. "The Air Force ladies always fight so hard and make you hit another shot to beat them. We played competitively throughout the lineup, but still need to be mentally tougher in the end. I was really impressed with Ani and Renu's play and passion this weekend, and look for it to carry over to next weekend."
The Eagles return to the court Friday, Feb. 5, when they head to the University of Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes. First serve is slated for 2:30 p.m. CT.
