In total, 359 student-athletes by conference Faculty Athletic Representatives

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Mid-American Conference announced, Friday, July 24, its list of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from 16 winter and spring sports for the 2014-15 academic season. Out of 359 student-athletes on the list, 55 Eagles were recognized as the 'best of the best' from each sport's Academic All-MAC teams.

The EMU men's indoor track & field team led all sports with 10 Eagles landing on the list. Along with its 2014 MAC Championship, the women's indoor track & field squad saw six student-athletes earn the conference's Distinguished Scholar-Athlete accolade. Three members of the Eastern men's swimming & diving team made the list, while the women's side boasted eight representatives. Rounding out the winter sports, four gymnasts earned the honor along with a wrestler.

In the spring, eight members of the men's outdoor track 2015 MAC Outdoor Champions were honored while six women's track standouts were represented. The women's golf  and baseball teams each had three  Distinguished Scholar Athletes while softball had two and women's tennis had one.

The Distinguished Scholar Athlete is a first-year award given to student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics.  Following each season from the sports schedule, any student-athlete with a 3.20 GPA and participation in at least 50 percent of the contests was automatically named to the previously announced Academic All-MAC Team from each sport.  Also, first-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence were not eligible for the award.

From the Academic All-MAC Teams, the faculty athletic representatives selected the 'best of the best' of our Academic All-MAC Teams to be honored with Distinguished Scholar Athlete Award for the 2014-15 season.  The number of Distinguished Scholar Athletes from each sport were equivalent to the number of first-team selections or 33% of nominees, whichever was greater.

Earlier this year, the MAC announced the 194 Distinguished Scholar Athletes from the seven fall sports sponsored by the Conference.  This combined with the 359 winter and spring sports gives the MAC 553 total students named as Distinguished Scholar Athletes during the 2014-15 academic year.
