Five newcomers set to join the defending MAC West Division champions
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University Head Soccer Coach Scott Hall announced Wdnesday, Feb. 11, that five future Eagles will join the current squad for the 2015 season. Accompanying the defending Mid-American Conference West Division champions this fall will be: Mia Colavito (Mississauga, Ontario-Loyola Catholic), Mikayla Cupp (Otsego, Mich.-Otsego), Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name), Mackenzie Etienne (Midland, Mich.-Midland Dow) and Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka).
"We enjoyed recruiting this group of players. They are intelligent students in the classroom and standout athletes on the field, and they all come from great families," commented Coach Hall. "We expect this group of five to come in and seize the opportunities that has been left to them by graduation of our 2014 senior class. They all have a chance to come in and contribute right away."
Hall continued the trend of bringing in top talent from north of the border with the addition of Colavito, a forward/attacking midfielder and native of Mississauga, Ontario. "Mia is a shifty attacking player who is very skillful and quick," noted Coach Hall. "She does a great job finding the ball and loves to play soccer."
Cupp, a midfielder, is one-of-two incoming Eagles that will remain in the state of Michigan to continue their athletic and academic careers. At Otsego Public High School, Cupp was a three-time first team all-conference, first team all-district, and all-county selection. Named Rookie of the Year in her freshman season before earning all-region and third team all-state honors in her sophomore campaign, she made an immediate impact on the pitch. "Mikayla is very hard-nose no nonsense midfielder," mentioned Coach Hall. "She has great vision and plays very simple on attack but has ability to knock you down and run you over. She loves to compete and finished in the top ten in her graduating class."
Davis will make the trip north from North Ridgeville, Ohio and will look to make noise on the offensive side of the field. She is also familiar with EMU as her brother, Jacob, is a junior on the Eagles' wrestling team. As a team captain her senior season, Davis led Holy Name High School to a district championship. She collected first team all-conference and First Team All-Greater Cleveland honors after leading her team in goals scored with 14 and adding eight assists in her senior campaign. "Peyton is agile, quick and athletic. She loves to compete and her knack for scoring goals will help fill the void of some top scorers that have graduated.," added Coach Hall.
Etienne, a Midland, Mich. native and member of the Michigan Jaguars, joins Cupp in the pair of in-state recruits. Expect to see her in the middle to help initiate the EMU offense. "Mackenzie is another tough central midfield type player," remarked Coach Hall. "She is strong, athletic, and intimidating, yet has a fantastic touch and mind for the game. Her field vision and high soccer IQ allows her to get out of tight areas quickly and generate attacks."
Rounding out the incoming class, Williams will become the the only Missouri native on the roster. The soon-to-be collegiate freshman will become the second goalkeeper on the roster, filling the void left by graduated Jenna O'Dell. "Kaylin was the top goalkeeper we recruited this year," voiced Hall. "When Coach Joe Malachino and I watched her, we both knew she was the right one. She is an unbelievable shot-stopper and handles crosses with ease. She also has a fantastic leg which can be used in set pieces all over the field."
The five new Eagles will look to be valuable pieces to the latest success of the EMU soccer team. Under the guidance of Coach Hall and a veteran cast of Eagles, the Green and White has captured a MAC regular season championship and two MAC West Division titles over the last two seasons. With the majority of those upperclassmen lost to graduation, the incoming 2015 class could make an immediate impact on the pitch.
