Senior LB becomes first defensive honoree from EMU to earn prestigious accolade
NEW HAVEN, Conn. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University senior linebacker Great Ibe (Philadelphia, Pa.-Meade-Concordia) has been named the Walter Camp Football Foundation Football Bowl Subdivision National Defensive Player of the Week, presented by Generation UCAN, for games ending Nov. 14. Ibe is the second EMU player to earn Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004, joining former Eagle quarterback Andy Schmitt (Nov. 8, 2008).
Ibe recorded a game-high 21 tackles (9 solo), two for losses, and one quarterback sack in Eastern Michigan's Senior Day 28-17 loss to Mid-American Conference foe the University of Massachusetts. The 21 take-downs are tied for his career most and the tally tied with Tennessee's Jalen Reeves-Maybin for the most in the nation this season.
Ibe's total is the most by an Eagle since last year when he hauled down 21 Minutemen in a contest also against UMass, Oct. 18, 2014. Eastern Michigan began tracking tackles in a game during the 1999 campaign, with Blake McCall holding the gold-standard with 29 against Ohio, Oct. 16, 1999.
The Philadelphia, Pa. native currently leads the team and the conference in total tackles, recording 123 on the season, despite missing one game due to injury. This ranks second in the country. In three seasons for the Green and White after transferring into the program, Ibe currently ranks 13th on the all-time tackles list at EMU with 318 stops.
This is the 12th year that the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor one offensive and one defensive player as its national Football Bowl Subdivision player of the week during the regular season. Recipients are selected by a panel of national media members and administered by the Foundation.
The offensive award is also coming to Washtenaw County this week, as Michigan's Jake Rudock completed 33-of-46 passes for a career-best 440 yards and a school-record six touchdowns as Michigan defeated Indiana, 48-41, in overtime.
Following 11 consecutive weekends in which the Eagles have played in games, Eastern Michigan has found it on its bye week. The Green and White will recharge the battery before heading to Mount Pleasant, Mich. for a "Black Friday" contest with Central Michigan University Friday, Nov. 28, at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
