Postgame Interview with Head Coach Scott Hall
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – An early strike by junior Gabriella Mancini (Troy, Mich. – Troy) put the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team ahead of the Akron Zips early as the Eagles (4-7-1; 1-3-0 MAC) grinded out a 3-2 win, Sunday, Oct. 4. Wrapping up a three-game home stand, the Eagles benefited from tallies by Mancini, junior Michelle Rollins (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland), and redshirt junior Ellie Tillar (Cincinnati, Ohio-Turpin) on attack. Freshman Kaylin Williams (Kansas City, Mo.-Winnetonka) recorded four saves on her way to her third win of the season.
Head Coach Scott Hall sent out the Eagles' ninth different starting lineup of the season to the pitch to open play against the Zips. The new set of 11 gave Mancini, Rollins, and freshman Peyton Davis (North Ridgeville, Ohio-Holy Name) the nod Sunday afternoon at Scicluna Field.
Attacking the Zips from the whistle, the Davis battled for a ball on the far sideline. Withstanding the pressure of her mark, Davis stood strong, eventually earning a free kick for the Eagles just inside of midfield. Junior Rachel Washburn (Hartland, Mich.-Hartland) trotted up from her defensive post to take the kick, delivering a cross to the middle of the 18 for Mancini. A perfect touch by Mancini redirected Washburn's delivery into the back of the net to give the Eagles a 1-nil lead in the 2nd minute. Mancini's strike marked the first goal by the Eagles in more than 235 minutes.
Eastern Michigan kept up the offensive pressure for the next 20 minutes, capping the dominating effort with a goal by Rollins. Redshirt junior Jennifer Bentley (London, Ontario-London) sent a throw-in to the corner for Davis. Going toe-to-toe with her mark, Davis sent a cross to Rollins 10 yards from the goal. With her mark in her back, Rollins spun to her right and fired a shot past Akron's keeper. The Eagles' second goal of the match marked the first of Rollins' career while Davis recorded her first assist donning the Green and White.
The Zips broke the shutout in the 27th minute, after Williams was booked for a yellow card on a play in the box. With a Zip forward driving towards goal, Williams flew off her line to dive on the ball but instead, clipped the Akron striker. Akron's Sarah Sivic capitalized on the ensuing penalty kick, sending the shot up and to the left of Williams to cut EMU's lead in half.
The untimely foul and penalty kick goal did not disrupt the Eagles' momentum as the Green and White poured the pressure on after the restart. Earning a corner minutes after Sivic's goal, Washburn served up another perfect cross. Elevating at the far post, Rollins' header was knocked away by a Zips defender at the goal line. The blocked header dribbled out to Davis whose attempted one-timer was scooped up by Akron's keeper.
Tillar and senior Megan Trapp (Plymouth, Mich.-Canton) fired off shots in the closing minutes of the first half but Akron's keeper made the saves, leaving the score 2-1 in favor of EMU at the half.
Heading into the 61st minute, the Zips held a 4-1 advantage in shots in the second half but the score remained 2-1, Eastern Michigan. The Eagles earned their fourth corner of the game, looking to extend their lead to two. After Washburn had taken the first three corners, Hall elected to have junior Madison Hirsch (Troy, Mich.-Troy) deliver the set piece. Sending a driving cross to the near post, Hirsch connected with Tillar who buried the header. Netting her first goal of the season, Tillar's timely tally put the Green and White in front, 3-1.
Three offsides calls against the Eagles kept them from adding to their lead while the Zips' attack fired away at Williams and the EMU defense. After Akron recorded six shots in a 20 minute span, a foul on the Eagles provided the Zips with a free kick just passed midfield. Hannah Werth drove a high soaring cross to the far post where Sivic collided with Williams and headed the delivery into the back of the net, cutting EMU's advantage to one, 3-2, with nine minutes to play.
The Zips pressed in hopes of leveling the score but the Eagles' defense contained the Akron strikers to preserve the 3-2 victory. The win marks the first Mid-American Conference victory for the Eagles this season and improves their overall record to 4-7-1.
Closing out a three-game home stand with a 3-2 victory, the Eagles will look to carry their momentum into their road match with Central Michigan University, Friday, Oct. 9 in Mount Pleasant, Mich. The match is set to start at 6 p.m.
