BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team dropped a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional matchup, 74-58, Wednesday, Jan. 21, when it traveled to Bowling Green, Ohio for a contest with Bowling Green State University at the Stroh Center. The Eagles (12-6, 1-4 MAC) saw two players crack double-figures in the scoring column, while the Falcons (12-4, 4-1 MAC) had two student-athletes notch double-doubles.
Tim Bond (Baltimore, Md.-City College High School) led the Eagles offensively, recording a career-best 13 points, while Raven Lee (Detroit, Mich.-Romulus) added 11 by knocking down three buckets from the beyond the arc and a pair of free throws. Anali Okoloji (Brooklyn, N.Y.-Impact Basketball Academy (George Mason)) led the Green and White in rebounds, with nine, while Jodan Price (Indianapolis, Ind.-Detroit Country Day (DePaul)) added six. Karrington Ward (Lockport, Ill.-Lockport Township (Moraine Valley C.C.)) and Mike Samuels (Bushkill, Pa.-East Stroudburg North (Indiana State)) each caromed five rebounds.
Anthony Henderson led the BGSU offense with 17 points. Richaun Holmes recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while Zack Denny added a double-double of his own, notching 10 points and 10 rebounds.
The game started off in a back-and-forth battle as the teams were deadlocked, 7-7, at the first media timeout. Coming out of the break, Lee knocked down a three from the wing, and Bond added a pair of free throws to quickly give the Eagles a five-point advantage. However, the Falcons responded with a 14-2 run that included back-to-back triples to take the lead, 21-14, with 9:31 remaining in the opening half.
With EMU trailing by nine, Okoloji sparked the Green and White offense with four straight points, including an old-fashioned three-point play. Once again, Bowling Green had an answer as Holmes rattled off an 8-0 run of his home to increase the Falcons' lead to double digits. A Bond runner in the lane with 36 seconds left would be Eastern's only points in the final four minutes as the Eagles went into the locker room trailing by a 37-26 margin.
The Green and White struggled with its shooting in the opening half, going 8-for-23 for a 34.8 percent clip, including 3-of-10 from beyond the arc. Nonetheless, EMU did find success at the charity stripe by knocking down 7-of-9. Nine turnovers plagued the Eagles in the first half as the miscues led to 14 BGSU points on the opposite end of the floor. Lee and Ward paced Eastern with nine points apiece, while Okoloji added six points and six rebounds as well. The Eagles held a slight rebounding advantage, 18-17.
Holmes and Henderson reached double figures in scoring for the first half, notching 11 and 10, respectively. Delvin Dickerson added nine points off the bench on 4-of-5 shooting, helping BGSU control the paint, 16-6. The Falcons shot 43.3 percent (13-of-30) in the first 20 minutes and added seven at the line by sinking 7-of-10. The Orange and Brown's passing proved to be a factor with 10 assists on 13 buckets.
Coming out for the second half, the Eagles' offensive woes continued as Bowling Green scored the first five points of the period. Eastern missed its first six shots before a thunderous slam by Ward got EMU on the board at the 15:05 mark of the final half. Six other Eagles to drill one basket apiece to round out the balance scoring, but EMU still found itself trailing by 12, 53-41, with under nine minutes to play.
With eight consecutive points from Lee as well as a bucket by Bond, EMU decreased the difference to single digits, 57-48, for the first time since the opening half. Seeming to be a common trend for the game, the Falcons rattled off a 12-0 run over a 5-minute span for their largest lead of the game, 69-48. Over the final 2:40 of the contest, the Eagles cut into the BGSU lead, but the Green and White was unable to mount the necessary comeback to get back into the game.
The Eagles will return to MAC West Division play, but remain on the road, traveling to Mount Pleasant, Mich. to square off against rival Central Michigan University, Jan. 24. The game can be heard on the airwaves of 89.1 FM (WEMU), and the game will also be broadcast live on ESPN3. Tipoff from McGuirk Arena is slated for 4:30 p.m.
