Complete Schedule of Events
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Three athletes from Eastern Michigan University's women's track and field team will represent their program at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships, June 11-14, in Eugene, Ore. The three Eagles, consisting of Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier), Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42), and Kate Wolanin (Oxford, Mich.-Oxford) are the most representatives that EMU has sent to the national meet in over a decade, as the squad has mustered one qualifier for the past three seasons.
Action will start on Wednesday, June 11, for the only returning Eagle with NCAA Championships experience. EMU record holder Voronko is slated to run the semifinal heat of the 3000m steeplechase at 6:45 p.m. PDT. Last year, Voronko finished 21st in 10:30.50 and missed out on qualifying for the championship heat, but the junior looks strong in her pursuit of a finals appearance. The Russian native has competed in the steeplechase just three times this season, but she has broken her own EMU record in every one of her appearances. Voronko's current personal-best time of 10:04.89 gives her the 11th-fastest time in the nation going into the NCAA Championships. If she makes the cut to compete in the final heat, Voronko will compete on Friday, June 13 at 5:35 p.m. PDT.
Thursday, June 12, will see just one Eagle participating, but the day's schedule of events will be full for Mid-American Conference heptathlon champion Chauchard. The senior is no stranger to the national scene either, as she garnered All-American honors following a sixth-place finish in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 16. Chauchard earned an automatic qualification into the NCAA Championships when her score of 5,574 points put her atop the podium at the MAC Championships, May 15-17. The French native recorded the second-highest score in EMU history, and will look to break Lela V. Nelson's impressive record of 5,878 points over Thursday and Friday. Chauchard will first compete in the 100m hurdles at 1 p.m. PDT, followed by the high jump, shot put, and 200m dash. On Friday, June 13, she will compete in the remaining three events starting with the long jump at 12:30 p.m. PDT along with the javelin throw and 800m run.
The third and final Eagle will compete on Saturday, June 14, at 12:45 PDT. After an impressive outdoor campaign and a spectacular runner-up finish thanks to a personal-best jump of 1.82 meters/5 feet 11.50-inches in the high jump, Wolanin will be making the first national championship appearance of her career. The Oxford, Mich. native is tied for the 13th-best clearance in the nation and holds the second-highest jump in EMU history. Wolanin will be on the hunt to not only advance out of the trials round into the final jumps, but she is also a contender to break the 32-year old EMU record set by Ellie Hayden, who set the school standard at 1.85 meters/6 feet 1-inch.
Results from the action at Hayward Field will be available through flashresults.com while ESPN3 will carry the live broadcast both on television and through WatchESPN.
