Carly Clark and Megan Hultgren will be members of the 2016 EMU Gymnastics team
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Gymnasts Carly Clark (White Lake, Mich.-Walled Lake Northern) and Megan Hultgren (Rockford, Ill.-Sacred Heart Classical Center) have signed National Letters of Intent to continue their career at Eastern Michigan University, Head Gymnastics Coach Jay Santos announced, Nov. 20. The two future Eagles represent the first full recruiting class for Coach Santos as the duo will be part of the freshman class for the 2016 season.
"We are extremely excited about the addition of both Megan and Carly to the EMU family," mentioned Coach Santos. "As we recruited both of these young women, it was easy to see their great work ethic and that both are driven to succeed equally in the classroom and the gym. Both Carly and Megan are strong all-around gymnasts, and I foresee both of them contributing on multiple events during their careers here at Eastern. I'm looking forward to great college careers for both of these future Eagles."
Clark is a level 10 gymnast, placing fifth on vault and beam at the Michigan State Championship earlier this year. She also showed her versatility with runner-up finishes on bars and in the floor exercise at the Buckeye Classic, Feb. 13. As a level 9 in 2013, Clark won the vault at the Eastern Gymnastic Championship as well as at the regional and state meets. Moreover, the White Lake, Mich. native won vault titles in nine consecutive meets during a span from late 2012 to early 2014. At the 2013 Kalahari Luau in Leos Gymnastics Invite, she earned the top score on vault with a personal-best 9.775. Coach Santos added, "Carly is a strong bar worker with good difficulty on that event, and she has good power on floor and vault; she will come in and make an immediate impact on our lineups."
Hultgren, a level 10 gymnast since 2010, is a two-time national qualifier. At the 2014 Level 10 Junior Olympic National Championships, the Rockford, Ill. native took second on bars with a score of 9.600. She also has been impressive at regional and state meets over the last two seasons. In March, she claimed the bar and beam titles while also placing runner-up on floor and all around at the 2014 Illinois State Championships. Her all around score of 38.187 at the state championship was a personal best. Receiving a 9.625 from the judges, Hultgren won the beam crown at the Region 5 Level 10 Championships, March 22, 2013. "Megan's strongest event is beam where her beautiful lines and impeccable technique really shine; coupled with her excellent swing on bars, she will be a definite presence in our lineups right away," noted Coach Santos.
EMU will kick off the 2015 campaign by hosting Temple in a Friday night dual, Jan. 9, at the Convocation Center. After hosting the 2014 Mid-American Conference Championships, the Convocation Center will take over as the primary home of EMU gymnastics meets, replacing Bowen Field House.
