Wrestling Set to Host EMU Duals and EMU Open

The Eagles will be wrestling three different teams in dual action, while other grapplers will wrestle in the open portion of the meet

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University wrestling squad will open its 2014-15 dual slate Saturday, Nov. 15, as it plays host to 13 different institutions between the EMU Duals and the EMU Open. For just the second time in program history, the Eagles will run two tournaments simultanously in Bowen Field House, with both starting at 9 a.m.
The Green and White's first dual of the day will be against Nortwestern University, starting at 9 a.m. before EMU takes on Southern Illinois University Edwardsville at 12 p.m. Eastern closes out the EMU Duals against Lock Haven at 1:30 p.m. The EMU Duals will be conducted on mats 1-6, while the EMU Open will be on mats 7-14. Since the 2005-06 season, Eastern holds a combined 5-4-1 record overs its competition this weekend, having lost to Northwestern and Lock Haven in the past eight seasons. Eastern has fallen three times at the hands of NU and one to LHU.
FRESH PRINTS: The Eagles saw two grapplers earn top-six finishes at the MSU Open, Nov. 1, as freshmen Derek Hillman and Kayne MacCallum earned fifth and sixth-place finishes in their respective weight classes.
Hillman made his way into the 184 lb. quarterfinal match of the freshmen/sophomore division at the MSU Open defeating Austin Droscha in the 15-3 major decision before taking down Harper College's Desmond Milligan in a 20-4 technical fall. Hillman fell into the consolation bracket after losing in an 8-5 decision to Mid-American Conference foe Quinton Rosser of Northern Illinois. Once in the consolation bracket, the Woodhaven, Mich. native picked up a sudden victory win over Brandon Sunday of Indiana Tech and a 4-0 decision over Tyler Hughes of Lake Erie to make it into the fifth-place match. Hillman was unable to hold off Shawn Shadaia of Michigan State, falling in a 7-2 decision and taking home the sixth-place finish.
In the first tournament of his collegiate wrestling career MacCallum posted a 3-1 record, finishing fifth overall in the 174 lb. freshman/sophomore division. MacCallum received a bye in the first round before defeating Levi Berry in a 14-1 major decision. The Green Oaks, Ill. native went on to win two more bouts on the afternoon, including a 4-1 decision in the fifth-place match.
A NEW LOOK FOR 2014-15: After the graduation of four starters from the 2013-14 campaign, Head Coach David Bolyard will need to revamp his starting lineup for the 2014-15 season. From the looks of the projected 10-man lineup for this season, the Eagles will have five new starters and will shuffle some of their grapplers around within the weight classes.
#KEEPBUILDING: The EMU grapplers have adopted the motto of #KeepBuilding for the 2014-15 campaign which will represent the team's ambitions to improve upon last year's record and individual goals. Eastern Michigan outscored its opponents 133-28 on the afternoon, defeating Tiffin 45-4 in their first dual before taking Gardner-Webb 33-3 in the second dual. The Green and White closed out the afternoon with a 27-6 victory over Drexel and a 26-15 win over Clarion. Eastern dominated its opponents dropping only seven of its 40 bouts on the day and averaging two pins per dual with eight total.
Abro also earned a bye in the first round of the open before facing two straight Big Ten opponents. The Canton, Mich. native took down Northwestern's Mitch Sliga in a 5-3 decision before earning a 3-1 decision in the semifinals over Michigan State's Eric Ford. The 184 lb. weight class finals saw a matchup between two MAC opponents as Abro went up against Kent State's Trevor White. Abro secured the 9-5 decision to earn a first-place finish for the Eagles.
Wireman went 4-0 in the open as he earned a bye in the first round before the "true" freshman garnered a 12-6 decision in round two. After Michigan State's Hermilo Esquivel forfeited because of injury, Wireman earned a narrow 3-2 decision over Mid-American Conference rival Del Vinas of Kent State in the semifinals. The Lansing, Mich. native held Northern Illinois' Derek Elmore to no points as he clinched a 4-0 decision in the finals to take home the first-place spot in the 125 lb. weight class.
SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN: The Eagles and the Wildcats have met up four different times on the mat with NU holding the 3-0-1 advantage over the Green and White.
The last time the Eagles and the Wildcats met on the mat, Eastern came away with its first tie against the Big 10 opponent. Eastern and Northwestern each notched 18 points and split the match with five wins apiece, while only two matches were won in extra points, Nov. 22, 2009.
The Wildcats sent two of their top grapplers to the NWCA All-Star Classic, Nov. 1. Returning 149 lb. NCCA Champion Jason Tsirtsis grabbed a 4-1 victory in his bout, while three-time All-American and 2013 NCAA finalist Mike McMullan clinched an 8-4 victory over the defending NCAA champion in the heavyweight division. Following the NWCA All-Star Classic, Northwestern headed to Palo Alto, Calif. for its first dual of the 2014-15 campaign. NU topped Stanford, 21-13, capturing six bouts in the season-opening dual to continue its domination over the Cardinal.
Along with McMullan and Tsirtsis, Northwestern returns Garrison White (125 lbs.), No. 19 Dominick Malone (133 lbs.), No. 5 Pierce Harger (165 lbs.), and Ben Sullivan (174 lbs.).
A QUICK GLANCE AT SIUE: EMU holds a perfect 4-0 mark against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville with its latest win coming in the 2013-14 season in Edwardsville, Ill., Feb. 9. The Eagles brought home a 24-13 victory, taking six of the 10 bouts. Returners Vincent Pizzuto, Nicholas Barber, and Anthony Abro all earned victories in their respective weight classes with Barber notching a major decision.
This season, the Cougars carry a 1-2 record coming into the EMU Duals with their only victory being against Mid-American Conference opponent Northern Illinois, Nov. 9. SIUE suffered losses to both Rider and Indiana, falling 31-9 to the Broncos and 44-0 to the Hoosiers, Nov. 9.
The Cougars return six starters from last seasons dual, including Karsten Van Velsor (149 lbs.), Jake Residori (174 lbs.), and David Devine (HWT), who all picked up victories against the Eagles.
A SNEAK PEEK AT LOCK HAVEN: The Bald Eagles hold a 0-1 dual record and placed second at the Brockport/Oklahoma Invitational to start the 2014-15 campaign. Lock Haven suffered a tough 17-16 loss to Hofstra, Nov. 2, before coming back and taking second in its first tournament of the season.
Redshirt-senior Fred Garcia posts a perfect 5-0 record, winning in a major decision against Hofstra before going 4-0 at the tournament, while Dan Neff is 4-1 on the season, falling only to Hofstra's Cody Ruggirello.
Eastern Michigan and Lock Haven have only met twice on the mats with both teams coming away with a victory. The last time the two teams met, the Bald Eagles took the 21-14 win at the Pitt Duals, Jan. 13, 2013. EMU only secured four wins in the duals with both Jake Byers and Jacob Davis earning decisions.
The Green and White earned a decisive victory over the Bald Eagles in the first ever meeting between the two schools, Jan. 8, 2011. The Eagles took a 34-6 decision, surrendering just two bouts to LHU.
UP NEXT ON THE MATS: The Eagles will travel to Bloomsburg, Pa. to take on the Bloomsburg University Huskies in a Friday night dual, Nov. 21. The first bout is slated to start a 7 p.m.
