YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University redshirt-freshman quarterback Reginald Bell Jr. (Los Angeles, Calif.-Susan Miller Dorsey) has been named one of the Mannning Award Stars of the Week for his performance in Saturday's 37-27 win over the University at Buffalo.
Bell is one of eight quarterbacks recognized this week. Fan voting will take place during the week, with the Manning Award Quarterback of the Week being announced on Thursday.
Bell rushed for 202 yards and three touchdowns while throwing for 144 yards and another score in the win. Bell entered the contest with 4:15 remaining in the second quarter when the team was down, 10-0, and propelled the squad to a 37-27 decision, bolstering the team's total yardage from 73 yards to 484 in just over a half a game. He also racked up a school record-tying four touchdowns.
The Los Angeles, Calif. native became the first player in school history to run for two 70-plus yard touchdowns in one game. He is the first Eastern quarterback to rush for over 200 yards; the previous high for a quarterback was Alex Gillett, who ran for 189 yards in a win over Ball State, Oct. 16, 2010. The 202 rushing yards by Bell in the Eagles' win over the Bulls marked the first time that an Eagle has run for more than 200 yards since Oct. 19, 2013, when Bronson Hill put up 257 yards against Ohio.
Bell continues to rack up the accolades as he was also selected the Mid-American Conference's Co-Offensive Player of the Week as well as the National Performer of the Week and the Quarterback Performer of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards (CFPA).
Other quarterbacks recognized this week include Cody Clements (UAB), Fredi Knighten (Arkansas State), Marcus Mariota (Oregon), Tyler Murphy (Boston College), Bryce Petty (Baylor), Dak Prescott (Mississippi State) and Jameis Winston (Florida State).
The Manning Award was created by the Allstate Sugar Bowl in 2004 to honor the college football accomplishments of Archie, Peyton and Eli Manning. It is the only quarterback award that includes the candidates' bowl performances in its balloting.
The EMU football team hits the road for its next contest, Oct. 18, when the Eagles take on the University of Massachusetts Minutemen. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass. The game will be broadcast on ESPN3 as well as the airwaves of WEMU.
