YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –
The Eastern Michigan University women's tennis team opened their home schedule with an easy 7-0 victory versus the Butler University Bulldogs at the Chippewa Racquet Club, Jan. 24.

To begin the dual match, Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) and Klara Supejova (Prague, Czech Republic-Sportovni Gymnazium Klandno) began things off on a winning note with a 6-1 victory at the No. 1-doubles spot. The duo won the first game, before letting Butler tie things up at one apiece. Mebuke and Supejova then went on a tear, ripping off five straight to take the 6-1 decision. Zsofia Biro (Pecs, Hungary-Tasi Sport School) and Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) gave Eastern the doubles point with a 6-1 decision of their own at No. 3-doubles. Diana Davitaia (Tbilisi, Georgia-Cowley County Community College) and Maria Paula Ribero (Bucaramanga, Colombia) took on the final doubles matchup at No. 2. The pair gave the Eagles a sweep in doubles action with a 6-2 win.

Moving on to singles, the Eagles' dominant play did not diminish. The Green and White did not drop a set in singles play, while sweeping all six to a quick 7-0 win. The quickest to finish in singles was Mebuke, making quick work of Angelina Qin, 6-1, 6-1. Toncheva dispatched Jocelyn Koester, 6-0, 6-1 with haste as well in her No. 4-singles matchup to give the Eagles an early 3-0 lead.

Next to finish her match was Ribero, topping Sienna Reuter easily, 6-1, 6-1, just in front of Davitaia, who dropped Kelley Eaton in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. Supejova was next in line to continue the winning ways. She knocked off Stephani McLoughlin 6-1, 6-3, as well, leaving just Daphne Friedrichs (Hufingen, Germany-Elisa Brandstrom Schule) to complete the sweep for EMU. After a 6-3 win in the first set, Friedrichs jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second set, but her opposition Grace Hyde fought back and took a game, but Friedrichs returned with three straight games for a 6-1 final, giving the Eagles a clean sweep.

"We did a good job of winning efficiently," said Head Coach Ryan Ray. "Tomorrow is two more matches and we will look carry the momentum from today to tomorrow."

Eastern is back in action with a doubleheader tomorrow, Jan. 25. The Eagles will take on IPFW at the Chippewa Racquet Club with a 1 p.m. start before hosting Oakland University at 8:30 p.m. at the Chippewa Club.
