YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will play 17 games within the city of Ypsilanti, as well as an exhibition matchup, giving EMU fans plenty of opportunities to come support the Eagles in their quest to make it back atop the MAC-West Division.
EMU has partnered up with the University of Kentucky to serve as co-host of The Keightley Classic a multi-team exempt tournament. As one of the host schools, the Eagles will play three games in Ypsilanti and one game on the road at Kentucky, Nov. 27.
"We are thankful and glad to have partnered up with Kentucky to co-host the Keightley Classic," mentioned EMU Head Men's Basketball Coach Rob Murphy. "It is a talented field and we are looking forward to hosting three of the teams at home."
The Eagles, who finished 16-18 overall and 7-9 in the Mid-American Conference last season, will begin the 2013 campaign with an exhibition tilt against Marygrove College at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 4, before starting the regular season later that week, Nov. 8, with a game against Albion College as part of the Eagles' Education Day at Noon.
Eastern will play three teams that participated in the NCAA Tournament last season (Akron, Duke and Syracuse) and 10 others that competed in other post-season events (Green Bay, Kentucky, Kent State, Massachusetts, Oakland, Ohio, Purdue, Robert Morris, Texas Arlington and Western Michigan). In addition to the Eagles playing 13 teams that appeared in the postseason, the Green and White will play three institutions that are ranked in The Sporting News' preseason top-10 rankings.
In addition to that very competitive non-conference schedule, the Eagles also announced their 2013-14 Mid-American Conference schedule today which includes 18 games, nine home and nine on the road.
Eastern will open the season with five-straight home contests, including two of which that will be played at the old home of the Eagles' hoops squads, Bowen Field House, before heading to Kentucky, Nov. 27.
EMU will open the 2013-14 campaign with a contest against NCAA Division III institution Albion College Friday, Nov. 8, at Noon.
After the home contest with Albion, the Eagles will take on Concordia at Bowen Field House before starting their competition in the Keightley Classic Thursday, Nov. 14, when the Green and White hosts its final game at Bowen against Robert Morris. EMU will return to the Convocation Center for two games in-a-row before hitting the road for the first time.
Other non-league battles include a Dec. 3 home tilt against Massachusetts, a Dec. 7 road date against Purdue, a Dec. 10 home contest with Green Bay followed by three road games. The Eagles will play at Oakland Dec. 21, Duke on Dec. 28, and then at Syracuse, Dec. 31. EMU will finish its non-conference schedule with Rochester, Jan. 4.
"We're excited about playing the tough non-conference schedule we've put together," said Murphy. "Facing elite programs such as Duke, Kentucky and Syracuse that have great basketball tradition are challenges we're looking forward to."
With the conference switching from the former 16-game format to its current 18-game format, the Eagles will have nine home and road games. Eastern is slated to open the 2013-14 MAC season, Jan. 8, on the road at Bowling Green. Other MAC road games include Buffalo, Jan. 11, Central Michigan, Jan. 19, Miami, Feb. 1, Akron, Feb. 5, Ball State, Feb. 12, Northern Illinois, Feb. 20, Western Michigan, Feb. 23 and Toledo, either March 7 or 8.
