EMU Head Coach Sue Parks brings in five transfers and five incoming freshmen
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Track and Field Coach Sue Parks announced that 10 student-athletes will be joining the team for the 2013-14 campaign, August 2. The recruiting class features five transfers along with five incoming freshmen.
"I am very excited about this recruiting class," said Coach Parks. "I believe that we addressed some of our weaknesses and improved the depth of the team significantly with the addition of this group. A number of these athletes compete in multiple events, and we expect that many of them will have an immediate impact at the Mid-American Conference level and beyond."
Coach Parks and her coaching staff recruits not only nationally, but worldwide. This year is not any different as four international student-athletes will join the EMU track and field family. Sarah Chauchard (Montpellier, France-University of Montpellier) and Pauline Chiariglione (Ajaccio, France-University of Nice) make the trek across the Atlantic via France while Spaniards Anna Quilez-Ribera (Girona, Spain-University of Girona) and Carmen Sanchez-Parrondo (Aviles, Spain-University of Vigo (Pontevedra)) will also join the Eagles.
Chiariglione comes to EMU from the University of Nice in Nice, France. A very versatile athlete, Chiariglione was a French national champion in the pentathlon for the 2011 season. She has also been a member of the French National Team. She will be looked at to score in a variety of events for the Eagles. Chiariglione will arrive in Ypsilanti as a senior with one year of eligibility remaining.
Chauchard will transfer to EMU from the University of Montpellier in France. Another decorated combined events athlete from France, Chauchard has been a national champion in France for the pentathlon in 2009 and heptathlon in 2011. She, like Chiariglione, has been a member of the French National Team and will look to contribute in multiple events in her only eligible season for the Green and White.
A transfer from the University of Girona in Spain, Quilez-Ribera will join the Eagles track and cross country teams this fall. The Aviles, Spain native has international experience under her belt, competing for Spain in the 2012 World Junior Track and Field Championships and the 2013 European Junior Track and Field Championships.
Sanchez-Parrondo will compete for Eastern after transferring from the University of Vigo in Spain. Most recently, Sanchez-Parrondo placed fifth in the javelin at the Spanish National Championships with a toss of 51.71 meters (169-feet 8-inches).
The lone transfer from the United States is Lansing Community College transfer Taylor Knoll (Warren, Mich.-Mott (Lansing Community College)). A graduate of Warren Mott High School, Knoll has a personal-best 5,000-meter time of 18:11.27.
Five incoming freshman from four different states will join the EMU track and field team, competing in a variety of events from distance races to jumps. Distance runners Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind.-Fremont) and Megan Hubbard (Hanover, Mich.-Horton) will help an EMU squad that lost a few seniors due to graduation. Aldrich placed sixth at the 2012 Indiana High School Cross Country Championships. She is also the first athlete from Fremont High School to receive a Division I scholarship. Hubbard, an in-state product, will make the trip from Hanover Horton High School to Ypsilanti to continue her running career. She finished ninth at the 2012 Division Three Cross Country Championships in Michigan.
The other Michigan native in this year's class is Janina Pollatz (Grandville, Mich.- Grand Rapids Christian). The State Champion in the pole vault and long jump, Pollatz captured both titles her senior season at the MHSAA Division Two Championships. She was also the state champion in 2012 as well as the Indoor MITS champion in 2012 and 2013.
A five sport letterman in high school, Kristina Coyne (Pittsburgh, Penn.-Chartiers Valley High School) will bring her track and field talents to Ypsilanti next year. Coyne accumulated 15 varsity letters in high school in track and field, soccer, volleyball, basketball and even football. She was the PIAA bronze medalist in the high jump for the 2013 season as well as a state qualifier in the 100 meter hurdles.
Natalie Uy (Kettering, Ohio-Fairmont), a native of Kettering, Ohio, will travel north to Eastern, attempting to make a spark in mulitple events. Uy was the OHSAA Division I State Runner-Up in the pole vault her senior year, as well as placing fourth in the high jump and 12th in the 100 meter hurdles. She was also the runner-up at the Midwest Meet of Champions in the pole vault.
Coach Parks and assistant coach Jerel Langley discuss each individual in the incoming class.
