National Championship Finish Earns Voronko All-American Status

EMU sophomore named All-American Honorable Mention by USTFCCCA

NEW ORLEANS, La. (EMUEagles.com) - Sophomore distance runner Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-University of Moscow) of the Eastern Michigan University women's track and field team, has earned All-American Honorable Mention status by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), the organization announced following completion of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championship.
Any athlete who earned a point or reached a top-eight final at the national championship earned the distinction of First Team All-America. Those who finished in places nine through 16 were awarded Second Team All America. Participants in the meet that did not place in the top 16 are placed on the All-American Honorable Mention list.
After breaking the EMU record at the NCAA East Regional to qualify for the national championship, Voronko placed 21st in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 10:30.50, missing the top-12 that would have qualified her for the finals. Not only did Voronko represent the Green and White, she was also the lone Mid-American Conference athlete competing in the race.
Voronko joins freshman Alysha Newman (Delaware, Ontario-Mother Teresa) as the only two Eagles to earn All-American accolades during the 2012-13 campaign. Newman finished 12th in the pole vault at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship in Fayetteville, Ark., March 9, earning a spot on the All-America Second Team.
