Trio of Eagles Named Honorable Mention Academic All-MAC

Ankita Bhatia, Nino Mebuke and Mariya Toncheva each earned the academic award
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University women's tennis players Ankita Bhatia (Gurgaon, India-Delhi Public Schools), Nino Mebuke (Tbilisi, Georgia-English-Spanish School) and Mariya Toncheva (Burgas, Bulgaria-Sport Scholl Vasil Levski) earned Academic All-Mid-American Conference Honorable Mention honors the league office announced Thursday, May 16.
Bhatia, who holds a 3.37 GPA in Management, finished with a 10-20 mark in singles play and a 9-21 record in doubles action. She turned in a 3-5 record during conference play splitting time at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5 and No. 6 during the season.
Mebuke, who has a 3.49 GPA in Psychology, closed the year with a 14-20 mark in singles play and a 21-13 record in doubles action. She turned in a three-set decision over Bowling Green to help the Eagles end Bowling Green's 12-match winning streak.
Toncheva, who holds a 3.26 GPA in Management, finished with a 14-14 mark in singles play and a 14-17 record in doubles action. She contributed to the Eagles' shutout against both Dayton and Oakland with two victories in both singles and doubles play.
Heading the list are two three-time Academic All-MAC selections senior Prang Pantusart of Akron and senior Maddy Eccleston of Bowling Green. Bowling Green topped the list with three honorees on the Academic All-MAC team. Joining Eccleston from the Falcons are two-time selections junior Nikki Chiricosta and junior Emily Reuland.
Akron and Northern Illinois were both represented with two selections. Joining Pantusart from the Zips was senior Ksenia Berestetska. Northern Illinois was represented by junior Haley Dekkinga and sophomore Nelle Youel.
Ball State sophomore Courtney Wild, Buffalo junior Tanvi Shah and two-time Academic All-MAC selection junior Nini Sujashvili of Western Michigan completed the 2013 Academic All-MAC squad.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
