The Eastern Michigan University baseball team knotted its series with Ohio University at a game apiece with a 5-4 victory Saturday, March 30, at Oestrike Stadium. Brian Hill (2-1) picked up his second win of the season for the Eagles (11-14; 1-4 MAC) who came away with their first Mid-American Conference win of the year.

The Bobcats (5-20; 2-3 MAC) nearly erased a 5-1 deficit with tallies in the sixth, seventh and ninth innings, but Kristian Calibuso converted the final three outs of the game with the tying run at second for his first save of the 2013 season. Hill recorded the victory after pitching 6.1 innings and giving up three earned runs on five hits.

Lee Longo (0-for-4) drove in the game-winning run in the fifth inning and John Rubino (1-for-3) scored that winning tally along with another in the Eagles' three-run first inning. Adam Sonabend (2-for-4) and Daniel Russell (1-for-5) each notched a double apiece and Sonabend chipped in with an RBI for a second straight day. Austin Williams (0-for-3) also posted an RBI for a second time in as many contests and Sam Ott (1-for-4) had one as well.

The top of Ohio's batting order hit a combined 3-for-17, but hitters five through nine picked up the slack with an 8-for-16 effort. Nine-hole hitter Ben Otto went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and an RBI, while No. 6 hitter Dan Schmidt was 2-for-3 with a home run and a run driven in. Cleanup man Tyler Wells also connected for a round-tripper on a 2-for-4 afternoon.

Marck Paliotto fell to 1-5 on the season after pitching five innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on six hits while striking out six.

After Hill sent the Bobcats down in order in the top of the first, Russell led off the Eagles' half of the frame with a double to the gap in left. With Rubino at the dish, Paliotto uncorked a wild pitch which skipped to the backstop and allowed Russell to slide home just ahead of the tag.

Rubino then walked and moved up to second on another wild pitch. Ott drove him in with a looping single to right center to make it 2-0 Eagles. Sonabend then roped another double to left-center and plated Ott for a 3-0 EMU edge.

Hill rolled through his three of innings, giving up just a pair of walks over that span. The senior lefty ended the third inning by inducing a 6-4-3 double play.

Ohio broke through for its first run and hit with two down in the fourth on a Wells solo blast to left field. That cut the EMU lead to 3-1. Eastern Michigan got the run right back in the bottom of the fourth as Williams grounded out to shortstop while scoring Jamie Simpson from third base. Simpson reached base on an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. He then stole third base to set the scene for Williams.

More sloppy fielding led to another EMU run in the fifth to increase the lead to 5-1. Rubino led off and found himself on second base thanks to a throwing error by Schmidt at shortstop. Ott then rolled another grounder to Schmidt, who threw home to try and nab Rubino at the plate. Rubino collided with the catcher and popped the ball out of his glove to score the run.

The Bobcats chipped away at their deficit with runs in the sixth and seventh to make it a 5-3 affair. An RBI double by Jake Madsen in the sixth scored Otto and Schmidt hit a solo homer to left-center in the seventh.

Taylor Dimmerling relieved Hill with one gone in the top of the seventh and gave up a single and a walk to load the sacks as the Ohio lineup flipped over. Cody Gaertner came to the plate and promptly grounded the first pitch right to Rubino at shortstop for a critical double play.

EMU still held a 5-3 lead heading into the top of the ninth. Dimmerling gave up a leadoff double to Schmidt and was pulled Calibuso. Calibuso fanned the first two batters he faced, but Otto lined a double down the left-field line to score Schmidt and put the tying run into scoring position. The home crowd breathed a sigh of relief as Gaertner grounded out in the next at bat to end the game.

The Eagles and Bobcats will play the rubber match of this three-game set Easter Sunday, March 31, at 1 p.m.
