Eagles Catch Huskies on Their Best Night, Falling 194.775-192.550

EMU gymnastics remains on the road to meet Southeast Missouri State, Sunday, March 3
RESULTS
DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) – The trend of catching opponents on their best night of the season continued for the Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team as the Eagles fell on the road to the Northern Illinois University Huskies, 194.775-192.550, on Victor E. Court Friday, March 1.
NIU's mark of 194.775 was the highest of the year for the Huskies, who improve to 4-4 and 2-3 in Mid-American Conference play on the 2013 season. NIU's Kim Gutland took the all-around title, tallying a 38.900. With the loss, Eastern drops to 3-7 on the year, including 0-4 in MAC meets.
NIU took an early lead on the vault while EMU competed on the uneven parallel bars, 48.700-47.675. The Eagles were able to cut the deficit on the vault with its best team score of the night, 48.625. Through two rotations on the vault and bars, the Green and White trailed the Cardinal and Black, 97.150-96.300.
Anna Willette led the Eagles in the first two events. The sophomore tied for first on the vault with a 9.825 mark along with a runner-up score of 9.725 on the bars. Redshirt senior Amanda Fuller recorded a 9.800 on the vault, enough for third place. Senior Kristina Kurkmilis added a 9.750, and freshman Ashlin Chambliss turned in a 9.650 on the vault in her EMU debut.
On the third wave, once again the Huskies recorded a 48.700, this time on the balance beam. Meanwhile, the Eagles tallied a 48.550 behind second-places scores of 9.800 via Fuller and Paulina Miller. Heading into the final rotation, the Eagles found themselves one point behind NIU, 145.850-144.850.
The Eagles could not mount a comeback due to Northern Illinois putting up an impressive 48.925 on the vault, while the judges gave Eastern a 47.700 on the beam with junior Kaylee Meyers' 9.775 leading the way.
NIU's Kim Gutland took the all-around title, tallying a 38.900. EMU did not have a gymnast compete in every event to qualify for the all-around competition.
EMU remains in action and on the road this weekend, traveling to Cape Girardeau, Mo. to face Southeast Missouri State University. The non-conference meet will begin at 2 p.m. Eastern time, and a link to the live webcast can be found at EMUEagles.com.
