Additions to the Eagles are from Oregon and Tennessee

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University women's basketball Head Coach Tory Verdi announced today, Aug. 2, that two student-athletes have committed to play for the Eagles. Denaya Brazzle (Portland, Ore.-Jefferson-Chipola College) and Bianca Cage (Memphis, Tenn.-Southwind) will join EMU for the 2012-13 season. Brazzle will have junior eligibility while Cage will be a freshman.

Brazzle, a 5-foot-6 guard, averaged 7.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 1.6 steals as a sophomore for Chipola College in Marianna, Fla. Brazzle, who started off her collegiate career at Midland College in Midland, Texas, reached double figures in points on four occasions in 2011-12 while notching five-or-more assists nine times. For her efforts, she was named second-team All-Panhandle Conference.

At Jefferson High School in Portland, Ore., Brazzle helped the Democrats to a 5A State Championship with a 19-2 record in 2010 after placing third at the state tournament in 2009. She was also selected second team All-Conference in each of her final three high school campaigns.

“Denaya is a strong guard who can play multiple positions,” said Verdi of Brazzle.  “We expect her to bring experience into the backcourt.”

Cage, a 5-foot-8 guard, was a four-year standout for Southwind West High School in Memphis, Tenn. As a senior, Cage averaged 19.8 points per game and shot 38 percent from beyond the arc. She had a senior night to remember, setting the State of Tennessee record for three pointers in a game with 13 and scored a career-high 48 points as the Lady Jaguars beat Kirby, 86-22, in a District 15-AAA game. Cage's 13 triples came on 20 attempts. She followed that up with a trio more threes and 23 points overall in a setback to District 15-AAA champion, Overton. For her efforts, she was named the Memphis Commercial Appeal Player of the Week.

A member of the school's 1,000-point club, Cage averaged 12.2 points a contest as a junior en route to earning the team's most athletic award. Also a standout in track, she was part of the 4x100-meter relay team that was crowned state champions in 2012.

“Bianca is a true scoring guard,” said Verdi of Cage.  “She has the ability to score in so many ways. When it is all said and done, I know Bianca is going to have a special career at EMU.”
