Nino Mebuke and Marcela Rivero also named to ITA’s Scholar-Athlete Award list

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University Head Women's Tennis Coach Ryan Ray's 2012 team along with two individuals have earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) national academic awards.

The 2011-12 women's team posted a 3.27 GPA to earn the distinction of being an ITA All-Academic Team.  That team award is the seventh consecutive yearly honor for the squad.

In addition to the team honor, EMU players Nino Mebuke and Marcela Rivero were both named to the ITA National Scholar-Athlete squad.  Mebuke has a 3.43 GPA as a psychology major and Rivero has a 3.66 GPA as a management major.

The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade-point-average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average a 3.2 GPA for the current academic year.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1) be a varsity letter winner, 2) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters.
