Box Score.
TUCSON, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University baseball team fell in game one of a three-game series to No. 7 University of Arizona, 9-2, Friday evening, March 9, at Hi Corbett Field. The Eagles responded after a four-run UA first inning with a pair of runs in the second, but the Wildcat offense pulled away with three more scores in the bottom of that frame.
The Eagles' (3-9) losing streak reached four games, while the Wildcats (11-2) have now won six in-a-row.
Joe Battistelli (1-3) tossed five innings, but was roughed up for nine runs (six earned) and 12 hits. He recorded neither a strikeout nor a walk. Paul Schaak pitched a solid three innings in relief, striking out a pair of Wildcats batters and giving up just one hit.
At the plate, Bo Kinder posted his third multi-hit game with a 2-for-4 performance. Lee Longo went 1-for-4 with a run scored, while Ben Magsig was 1-for-4 and tallied a run.
For Arizona, ace starter Kurt Heyer (4-0) won a fourth consecutive decision after pitching eight innings and giving up no earned runs while striking out eight EMU batters.
Five Wildcats hitters recorded multi-hit games including Robert Refsnyder, who led the way with a 2-for-4 afternoon and a trio of RBI.
The EMU defense committed four errors Friday, marking the sixth time this season that the Eagles have made three-or-more miscues in a game.
Joey Rickard led off the UA first inning with a double down the left field line and became the first of four Wildcats to score in the inning.
Longo notched a leadoff single in the top of the second inning and was followed by a Magsig double which put runners at second and third with none out. After Heyer retired the next two batters, Longo and Magsig scored on fielding error by UA third baseman Seth Mejias-Brean to make it a 4-2 game.
Arizona broke the game open in the second inning with three runs on four hits and an additional pair of tallies in the fourth for a commanding 9-2 lead.
Eastern Michigan allowed just two hits through the final five innings, but was unable to scrape together any more runs as Arizona walked away with the victory.
The middle game of the series is slated for Saturday, March 10, at 6 p.m. MT. EMU right-hander Steve Weber (1-1) will square off against Konner Wade (2-0) on the hill.
