YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)— The Eastern Michigan University baseball team broke out to a 10-0 lead and was backed by steady pitching in a 12-2 thumping of Washtenaw County rival University of Michigan Wednesday evening, March 28, at Oestrike Stadium. The Eagles improved to 6-1 at home this season and scored 10-or-more runs for the fourth time in 10 games.
Eastern Michigan (9-15; 2-1 MAC) scored a pair of runs in the first and struck for five more in the fifth inning to take a 7-0 lead. Michigan (12-13; 0-0 B1G) was unable to generate much offense as starting pitcher Jordan Glover and reliever Collin Taylor (1-0) combined to allow just four hits while striking out four apiece over the first six innings.
Not satisfied with seven runs, EMU scored three more times in the fifth and twice in the seventh to complete a 12-run outing. Michigan scored single runs in the seventh and ninth, but it was not enough to prevent the Eagles from rolling to a third consecutive win over the Wolverines dating back to last season.
Taylor picked up his first win of the season and has now racked up 13 strikeouts in his last two relief appearances. The Cincinnati, Ohio native tossed 2.1 innings of scoreless baseball and did not issue a walk. Glover left with the lead after two were out in the fourth, but was ineligible for the win because he did not pitch at least five innings. He allowed three hits and walked three batters.
Bo Kinder extended his hitting streak to a career-best 12 games with a huge 3-for-5 performance. The senior belted a trio of singles and drove in three runs while scoring four times. Kinder also reached base safely for a team-leading 18th straight contest.
Brent Ohrman also had three RBI in a 2-for-4 showing which included a bases-loaded triple in the fourth. The three bagger was Ohrman's fourth of the season and tied him for the team and conference lead.
Lee Longo bounced back from a tough outing against Ohio State to go 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored. Ben Magsig (1-for-2, three runs scored) ran his season walk total to 21 with a pair of free passes.
For the Wolverines, James Borque (1-1) took the loss after giving up four runs in 3.1 innings. Alex Lakatos came on in relief and was roughed up for six more (five earned) runs on four hits.
Patrick Biondi (3-for-5) and Will Drake (2-for-4) posted productive afternoons for Michigan, with Drake accounting for both Wolverines' RBI.
EMU wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, as Magsig scored on a Jamie Simpson groundout and Longo plated Kinder with a single through the left side in the opening inning.
Michigan put a runner in scoring position in the second, but Dylan Delaney lined out harmlessly to end the inning. Glover worked his way into trouble in the following frame by walking Cole Martin with two out. John Lorenz hit a ground ball back up the middle, but Austin Williams flipped over to Tucker Rubino covering second base for the force out.
With Taylor on the hill, Zach Zott struck out looking with runners on second and third to end the fourth. The Green and White stepped up to bat in the bottom half of that inning and broke the game open with five runs on three hits. One run was already across when Ohrman sent a long drive into the right-field corner to bring Longo, Simpson and Kinder around to score. Matt Hitt drove in the inning's final run to make it a 7-0 game.
In the fifth, Rubino, Magsig and Kinder all touched home plate to make an EMU victory all but certain. Michigan graced the scoreboard with a run in the seventh, but the Eagles answered right back with two more for a 12-1 lead.
The EMU bullpen finished the job as Jeffrey Rousseau worked two innings and Joe Battistelli tossed the ninth inning. Each pitcher was charged with one earned run and Rousseau struck out two hitters, while Battistelli fanned one.
The Eagles will resume Mid-American Conference play with a three-game series at Ohio University Friday-Sunday, March 30-April 1.
