EMU to Compete at Mid-American Match Play

EMU golfers open Spring season in Dade City, Fla.

DADE CITY, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team opens its Spring season,  Monday, Feb. 13, traveling to Dade City, Fla. to compete in the Mid-American Match Play. The tournament is hosted by Ball State University and will take place at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club.

The two-day event will consist of 54 holes of match play competition and will be a double-elimination tournament. The first two rounds will be played Monday, Feb. 13, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. for the first round and continuous play for the second round. The third and final round will be Tuesday, Feb. 14, with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.

There will be eight Mid-American Conference teams in the tournament field, including, EMU, Akron, Bowling Green, Miami University, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo and host Ball State.

The tournament will be played on the Lake Jovita South Course. The 220-acre course was designed by Tom Lehman and golf course architect Kurt Sandness. The Par 5-11th hole features a 94-foot drop from tee to green, the largest natural elevation change of any course in the state of Florida.

In round one, sophomore Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) will be paired up with Charlie Olson (BGSU), Ryan Mason (Akron) and Ben Peacock (MIA). Junior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos) will face Parker Hewit (BGSU), Cameron Simmons (Akron) and Brett Tomfohrde (MIA), while senior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's) will be paired up with Drew Preston (BGSU), Scott Landreth (Akron) and Austin Kelly (MIA). Freshman Alex Jones (Dewitt, Mich.-Dewitt) will take on Wes Gates (BGSU), Harry White (Akron) and Mark MacDonald (MIA). Freshman Brian Burt (Dimondale, Mich.-Holt) will compete against Chris Melvin (BGSU), Miguel Meyer (Akron) and Luke Shaughnessy (MIA). Senior Zach MacDougall (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada-Centennial) will be paired with Joe Cooper (BGSU), Tim Lew (Akron) and Scott Cahill (MIA).
