EDINBORO, Pa. (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University wrestling team closed out the 2011-12 regular season Saturday, Feb. 11, at the Edinboro Open. Five Eagles placed at the event, with redshirt sophomore Nick Whitenburg securing first-place honors at 197 lbs.
Whitenburg posted a perfect 5-0 record on the day, notching several impressive victories including a 3-2 decision over Nick McDiarmid of Michigan State University in the semifinal match and a 7-0 shutout of Jace Bennett of Cornell University in the title bout. McDiarmid entered the tournament with the No. 1 ranking at 197 lbs., while Whitenburg was ranked fourth and Bennett third.
Saturday's competition capped-off a 6-0 week for Whitenburg, who will represent Eastern Michigan at the Mid-American Conference Championships. Earlier in the week, the Temperance, Mich. native fought to a 16-0 technical fall over the University at Buffalo's Justin Heiserman.
In the heavyweight bracket, redshirt senior Wes Schroeder came up just short of a first-place finish to claim runner-up honors. Schroeder won his first four matches including a first-round pin before falling in the championship bout to Justin Grant of Bloomsburg University, 8-4.
Freshman Vincent Pizzuto posted another strong showing Saturday after battling to a fourth-place finish in his first tournament wrestling out of the 133 lbs. weight class. Pizzuto won his four of his first five matches with a trio of decisions and a fall before coming up short in the third-place bout, 5-1.
Placing fifth in their respective brackets were redshirt freshman Jake Byers (133 lbs.) and Mike Curby (184 lbs.). Byers posted a 4-2 record, earning the fifth spot with an 8-3 recision over Derek Reber of Penn State University. Curby also went 4-2 and secured his fifth place finish by winning four out of five matches after dropping his opening tussle with Michigan State's Ian Hinton.
