YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University football team embarks on its 120th season Saturday, Sept. 3, at Rynearson Stadium versus Football Championship Subdivision foe Howard University. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:06 p.m.
The Eagles and the Bison are meeting for the second time on the gridiron, with the Green and White holding down a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series. The last time the teams hooked up was Sept. 22, 2007, when EMU notched a convincing 38-15 victory at Rynearson Stadium.
TWO FCS OPPONENTS AWAIT: The 2011 schedule features a pair of home games against Football Championship Subdivision opponents in Howard University, Sept. 3, and Alabama State University, Sept. 10. It marks the first time since 2008 that EMU will have played a FCS school.
With the two-year absence from the schedule, the Eagles are one of only four teams – EMU, Bowling Green, Miami and Toledo – in the Mid-American Conference not to have played a Football Championship Subdivision team in either the 2009 or 2010 campaign.
OPENING UP: EMU is 53-58-8 (47.9%) all-time on opening day. This will be the fourth straight season, and the sixth occasion in the last 10 years, that the Eagles will open at home in Rynearson Stadium, where last year they debuted with a 31-27 setback to Army to start the 2010 campaign.
WINNING STREAK: The Eagles have posted a 6-3 record against Football Championship Subdivision opponents since the 2001 campaign. However, EMU is currently riding a two-game winning streak that includes a 38-15 decision over Howard, Sept. 22, 2007, and a 52-0 victory over Indiana State, Aug. 28, 2008.
During the nine-game span, the Green and White have averaged 30.1 points and 406.1 total yards of offense per game, while giving up an average of 23.4 points and 366.8 yards per contest.
MICHIGAN BORN AND BREAD: The Eagles' roster features 34 players from the state of Michigan. This total ranks second among Michigan MAC schools, trailing Central Michigan (59) and in front of Western Michigan (33).
2011 SEASON: The 2011 season will be the 120th for the Eastern Michigan University football team. The first year of intercollegiate football in Ypsilanti was 1891 when the team posted an 0-2 record. EMU has fielded a team every year since 1891 with one exception, when the 1944 season was canceled because of World War II.
36th FOR THE MAC: The 2011 season will mark the 36th year that the Eagles have been a part of the Mid-American Conference football championship race. EMU was admitted into the league in 1971, but a complete league schedule was not available until the 1976 season.
SIX-PACK AT HOME: For the first time since the 2003 campaign, the Eagles will host six home games in the confines of Rynearson Stadium. EMU hosted six games during the 2004 campaign, but one of the contests was held at Ford Field in Detroit, Mich. against Central Michigan University as part of the inaugural Collegiate Clash.
31 AND COUNTING: Despite the Eagles' recent struggles, an impressive streak has remained intact and will enter its fourth season in 2011. EMU has not been held scoreless in a game since a 37-0 home loss to Northern Illinois University, Sept. 27, 2008 - a streak of 31 games.
In fact, the Eagles have only been shut out three times in the past 106 games dating back to the start of the 2002 campaign. Additionally, Eastern Michigan has scored 35-or-more points in a game on 18 occasions during that same span.
PRESEASON PROGNOSTICATIONS: EMU was picked to finish sixth in the Mid-American Conference West Division determined by 26 members of the league's media contingent. The annual preseason poll was released Tuesday, July 26, at the conference's 2011 football media day held at Ford Field.
The Eagles received 24 votes in the annual poll with Toledo selected first in the West Division with 83 points followed by Northern Illinois (81), Western Michigan (76), Central Michigan (55), Ball State (27) and EMU (24).
Miami was chosen to win the East Division title with 97 points while Ohio was a close second at 96. Temple was chosen third in the East with 88 points followed in order by Kent State (57), Bowling Green (48), Buffalo ( 37) and Akron (25).
A total of five teams received votes for winning the annual Marathon MAC Football Championship Game between the winners of the West and East Divisions. Toledo led the way with five votes with Northern Illinois and Miami gaining three votes. Ohio and Western Michigan each also received a vote.
PLENTY OF FANS IN THE STANDS: The Eagles will likely play in front of more than 100,000 fans on two separate occasions this season with trips to the University of Michigan, Sept. 17, and Penn State University, Sept. 24. U-M's Michigan Stadium holds the standard for largest seating capacity with 109,901, while PSU's Beaver Stadium is the next largest at 107,282.
The largest crowd to ever watch an EMU football team in action was the 110,438 in attendance when the Eagles dropped a 59-20 decision at Michigan, Oct. 19, 1998.
