The senior and sophomore each set top 2011 MAC marks
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Senior pole vault specialist Jessica Hemingway and sophomore sprinter Naomi Andre were named Mid-American Conference Field and Track Athletes of the week, respectively, by the MAC office in Cleveland, Ohio.
The duo was able to pull off a sweep of the weekly award for the Eagles first such feat all season. Each athlete set a new top mark in the conference, as Hemingway was tops in the conference in the pole vault and Andre's best came in the 200-meter dash.
Andre ran a 23.90 in the event at the Silverston Invite at the University of Michigan, capturing a first-place finish in the event. In addition to her time being a career-best and the best time in the MAC this year, it was also the fifth-best time in school history.
Hemingway was able to break a six-year-old University of Michigan facility record and a nine-year-old Eastern Michigan record when she hit a mark of 13-07.25 in the pole vault. The new record is the highest mark ever cleared by any EMU pole vaulter, in either the indoor or outdoor seasons, besting an old mark of 13-05.75. Only 11 higher marks have been cleared this year nationally in the pole vault, and Hemingway's mark stands as the 18th-best in the nation.
The awards and new MAC season marks send the Eagles with momentum into the MAC Championships this weekend at Bowling Green State University as the team is shaping up to post its best finish during the Sue Parks era.
