Box Score

CLEMSON, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) – Behind the right arm of Kevin Brady, the fourth-ranked Tigers of Clemson defeated the Eastern Michigan University baseball team, 5-1, and in the process won the series two games to one, in front of 3,985 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, Sunday, Feb. 20.

Brady struck out 10 batters over 5.1 innings of work, giving up just a run on two hits en route to the victory. EMU starter, Steve Weber (North Royalton, Ohio-North Royalton), took the loss despite a fair showing, going five innings and giving up four runs on six hits while striking out three and walking two.

With the loss, the Eagles fall to 1-2 on the season while the Tigers improve to 2-1.

Clemson struck first on Spencer Kieboom's RBI groundout in the second inning. Brad Miller scored after drawing a one out walk and advancing to third on a John Hinson single up the middle.

Tigers starter Kevin Brady was untouchable through the first three innings as he recorded six strikeouts without allowing a hit. The only runner to reach was Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) via a hit-by-pitch.

In the bottom half of the third, Clemson right fielder Chris Epps, who led off game one of the series with a home run, connected on another as he sent a two-run shot over the right field fence and extending the lead to 3-0.

Brady got himself into some trouble in the fourth as the Eagles put runners on first and second with one out thanks to a fielding error by the third baseman and a walk. EMU had its best opportunity to that point of cracking the scoreboard, but Brady struck out Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) and then got Wendzicki to fly out to left to end the threat.

Clemson would add another run in the fourth on Kieboom's RBI single to center to drive in Hinson from second, giving the Tigers a 4-0 lead.

In the Eagles' half of the sixth, Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) – who went 4-for-4 in the team's win yesterday – tripled to left center before Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale CC) drove him home with a fielder's choice. Brady's day would finally be done after getting Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing CC) to flyout.

The EMU bullpen consisting of Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ont.-Ontario Schools), Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert CC), Taylor Dimmerling (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg), Collin Taylor (Cincinnati, Ohio-Lakota West) and Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Wayne) came in and pitched three solid innings in relief, giving up just one run on two hits despite five walks.

The only run allowed by the bullpen was a questionable insurance run to the Tigers in the eighth. With one out, Hinson doubled to left and stole third on a call that made the third base umpire question himself as he started to make an out signal before quickly converting to a safe call.

It brought EMU Head Coach Jay Alexander out of the dugout in protest, but the call stood despite video replay showing the Tigers may have gotten away with a break. The batter, Kieboom, then made the second out of the inning with a groundout to first base, followed by an RBI double by Addison Johnson to make it a 5-1 ballgame.

Offensively, Leonard 2-for-4 on the day to lead the Eagles and went 6-for-13 with three runs scored for the series. Russell went 1-for-4 on the day with a triple and a run and finished the series 5-for-11 with three runs scored and three extra-base hits.

The Eagles will return home before turning right around and heading south to take on the Kentucky Wildcats (0-3) in a single game, mid-week affair Wednesday, Feb. 23. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. and live stats, audio and video will be available through Kentucky's website.
