Gymnastics captures second MAC win

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team registered a 189.550-185.750 victory over Bowling Green State University Saturday afternoon, Feb. 12, at Warner Gymnasium.
With the win the Eagles advance to 2-5 (2-2 MAC), while the Falcons fall 1-5 (0-4 MAC).
Senior Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Carmel) led the Eagles finishing first in both the vault and floor exercise posting scores of 9.725 and 9.675, respectfully. She also helped the Green and White by recording a 9.175 finishing tied for sixth with fellow teammate Miranda Jarvis (Westminster, Md.-Westminster). Jarvis also finished just below Viltz on the vault posting a 9.675 coming in second and recorded a 9.500 on the floor exercise earning a fourth place finish.
Freshman Ashley Quinton (Calgary, Canada-Bishop Menally) had a solid showing posting a season best 9.625 on the uneven parallel bars finishing tied for first with BGSU's Amber Brewer and junior Stacie Wood (Brantford, Ont.-Brantford Collegiate Inst.). Quinton recorded a second career high 9.550 on the vault. Wood posted a 9.500 on the floor exercise earning a fourth place finish.
Shawna Ciaramella (Hamilton, Ont.-St. Mary CSS) and Jessica Perdoch (Reading, Pa.-Exterior Township) both recorded career highs on the balance beam finishing first and fourth earning a 9.450 and 9.350, respectively. Perdoch also chipped in a strong 9.400 on the bars finishing in seventh, while Ciaramella received a 9.375 for her performance on the floor exercise.
Junior Kristin Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.-La Cueva) recorded a second place finish on the floor exercise earning a 9.625 and a 10th place finish on the bars posting a 9.250. Sophomore Kristina Kurkmilis (Eagleville, Pa.-Methacton) earned a 9.600 on the vault giving her a third place finish to help the Eagles earn their second Mid-American Conference win of the season.
The Eagles stay at home and welcome the Air Force Academy Saturday, Feb. 19, for the first of three meetings between the two teams this season. The meet starts at 1 p.m. and will be held at Bowen Field House. The Eagles follow with a trip to Mount Pleasant to take on the Chippewas of Central Michigan University Friday, Feb. 24.
