ANAHEIM, Calif. (EMUEagles.com)— Former Eastern Michigan University pitcher Matt Shoemaker continued to rack-up Minor League accolades when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim organization named him the recipient of the 2011 Howie Gershberg Minor League Pitcher of the Year Award Friday, Oct. 14.

Shoemaker spent most of his fourth season in the Angels' farm system with Double-A Arkansas, where he was named Texas League Pitcher of the Year after going 12-5 with a 2.48 ERA in 23 starts. He had five complete games and two shutouts, and his 1.07 WHIP was the best at the Double-A level. Promoted to Triple-A Salt Lake later in the season, he made four starts with the Bees.

Shoemaker was also among the 24 Minor League players named to the U.S. national team for this fall's World Cup and Pan American Games.

The 6-foot, two-inch right hander from Trenton, Mich. was signed out of EMU in 2008 as a free agent.

During his time as a member of the Eagles (2005-08), Shoemaker set EMU's single-season record in saves (14) in 2007 while recording a 3.97 ERA in 34 innings of work and 23 strikeouts. He was also a second team All-MAC selection that season. In 2008, he was named to the MAC All-Academic team and was an All-MAC second team selection for the MAC Tournament champion Eagles. Overall, he appeared in 56 games and compiled a 6-7 record with a 4.85 ERA in 137.1 innings.
