HUNTINGTON, W. Va. (EMUEagles.com) -- It didn't take long for the Eastern Michigan women's tennis team to shake off a season-opening loss to #53 Marshall, as the team returned to action today, Saturday, Jan. 15, to take a dominant 7-0 win over Morehead State.
Eastern Michigan (1-1) started out hot in doubles competition as Miriam Westerink and Nino Mebuke upended Jessica Montemayor and Lauren Delaney 8-2 and Xu Chang and Mariya Toncheva blanked Brooke Helms and Catharine Butts, 8-0. Morehead's Alix Young and Victoria Cran played EMU's Celine Donnet and Georgia de'Lisle-Tarr to the brink, but the Eagles of Eastern Michigan prevailed, 8-7.
The doubles momentum carried over into singles play, as EMU did not drop a match, and only two matches went beyond two sets. After Marcela Rivero fell in the first set of her match with Cran, she rebounded to score a three-set victory, 4-6, 6-1, 10-6. Toncheva also dropped the first set of her match with Delaney before winning the final two sets, 6-0, 10-4. Xu, Mebuke, Donnet and Karina Ahuja all won in impressive two-set outings.
"I was glad to see all the ladies pull out their matches," said head coach Ryan Ray. "I hope we can continue to build on this."
The Eagles will resume competition in the state of Illinois Friday and Saturday, Jan. 21-22, when the team faces Illinois-Chicago and Depaul.
