EMU Women Fall to Toledo in MAC West Division Battle

Eagles suffer cold-shooting effort in 72-56 setback

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team was the victim of a cold-shooting effort in a 72-56 loss to the University of Toledo Rockets here Saturday afternoon, Jan. 15, in a Mid-American Conference West Division match up in the Convocation Center. The game was televised by SportsTime Ohio.
The Eagles, now 11-7 overall and 2-2 in league play, shot just 33.9 percent from the field, hitting 21-of-62 shots and the Green and White could manage just 1-of-10 three-point attempts for 10 percent.
Meanwhile Toledo, now 12-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in MAC play, connected on 27-of-64 shots from the field for 42.2 percent and the Rockets hit a blistering 56.3 percent from beyond the arc, making 9-of-16 shots. Toledo also managed a huge 50-34 edge on the boards.
EMU was led by Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) and Cassie Schrock (Wadsworth, Ohio-Wadsworth) with 13 points each while Paige Redditt (Kansas City, Mo.-Belton) and Sydney Huntley (Cincinnati, Ohio-Marian Purcell) added 10 each. James grabbed eight rebounds while Schrock and Redditt both had six boards each.
Toledo had five players in double figures led by Melissa Goodall who turned in a double-double with 12 points and 14 rebounds. Teammates Jessica Williams scored 17 points, Yolanda Richardson scored 16, Andola Dortch added 11 and Janelle Reed-Lucas chipped in 10.
The early going belonged to the home team as the Eagles raced to a 9-3 lead in the first five minutes.
Eastern would increase that advantage to nine, 15-6, before Toledo's Janelle Reed-Lewis answered with two threes from the baseline to cut the margin to three, 15-12, with 11:30 left.
The Rockets would then go on a 11-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 23-16 lead at the 5:34 mark of the first half.
Eastern would finally break the scoreless streak on a 10-foot jumper by James to make it 23-18 Toledo with 4:18 left.
The Rockets would improve that lead to seven, 31-24, at halftime.
Toledo would hit 5-of-10 three-point field goals to charge up their first-half offense while the Eagles did not hit a triple in the first 20 minutes. Toledo also held a 29-19 rebound advantage.
The visitors opened the second half with another quick flurry, building its lead to 13, 40-27, with 15:31 left and Toledo would bump that to 17, 47-30, just three minutes later.
The Rockets would keep their offense rolling the remainder of the game, gradually boosting its lead to 25, 67-42, with just 5:15 left.
The final few minutes turned into bench time as both teams substituted freely.
Eastern's next action will be Wednesday, Jan. 19, in Kalamazoo against in-state rival Western Michigan.
