YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University football team will travel out of the Mid-American Conference to face the No. 2 ranked team in the country in the Big Ten's Ohio State University Buckeyes, Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010. The game will be televised live nationally on ABC-TV. The two teams will be meeting for the first time ever.
EMU HAS HAD TRESSEL'S NUMBER: Eastern Michigan had successful battles with Jim Tressel-coached teams at Youngstown State, with the then-Hurons holding a 4-1 record against the Penguins between 1986 and 1990. The four setbacks account for five percent of Tressel's 78 career losses in 25 years as a head coach.
Eastern won the Sept. 6, 1986 match-up in Youngstown by a slim 18-17 margin before following it up with a 35-20 victory Sept. 5, 1987 at Rynearson Stadium en route to the school's lone Mid-American Conference Championship. The Green and White then posted a 17-12 victory, Sept. 10, 1988, and added a 14-3 decision Sept. 9, 1989. Tressel's lone victory occurred in the series finale, when YSU won 24-14, Sept. 22, 1990.
RANK'EM: Saturday's Sept. 25 game at Ohio State marks the first time EMU has faced an opponent ranked in the top 25 since Oct. 25, 2008, when it dropped a 38-16 decision at home against No. 20/22 Ball State. The second-ranked Buckeyes are the highest-ranked opponent EMU has faced since traveling to Florida in 2004 when the Gators were ranked No. 11 in the coaches' poll. EMU has played five times against top 25 ranked teams in its history and the Eagles are 0-5 in those games. In addition to the Ball State and Florida games, EMU has lost to No. 14 Michigan (2005), No. 10 Wisconsin (1994) and No. 10 Penn State (1992).
BIG PLAY RECEIVER: Sophomore wide receiver Kinsman Thomas (Bennettsville, S.C.-Marlboro County) has 19 receptions and five touchdown catches in his 11-game EMU career and big plays have been a huge part of his success. Three of his touchdown passes have been for 40 yards or more and two of those have been for 71 and 77 yards. He has caught 19 passes for 408 yards and a 21.5-yard average per catch during his career.
FAMILIAR FACE: There will be a familiar face to EMU fans in the Ohio State University press box this weekend. Current Ohio State director of athletics Gene Smith was part of the EMU athletics administration from 1983-93, the last eight as the athletics director.
TELEVISION TIME: The 2010 EMU football team will make five television appearances. The EMU at Ohio State game, Sept. 25, has been scheduled for a 3:30 p.m. start on ABC and ESPN (reverse mirror). The EMU-Ohio game, Oct. 2, will be shown on ESPN regional and there will be three games, EMU at Miami, Sept. 11, EMU home vs. Toledo, Oct. 30, and EMU at Buffalo, Nov. 20, all on SportsTime Ohio.
PUNTING POWER: The Eagles' punting game has been a pleasant surprise through the first three games. First-year punter Jay Karutz (North Ryde, New South Wales, Australia-Holy Cross College) has punted 13 times for 573 yards and a 44.1 yard average, to rank 23rd nationally. He has dropped six of his 13 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line. As a team, the Eagles are sixth in the NCAA in net punting at 43.77.
LONG-RANGE SCORE: True freshman wide receiver Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) caught a short sideline pass from quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) and turned on the jets for a 51-yard touchdown reception last weekend, Sept. 18, at home against Central Michigan. The play was Scott's first career touchdown.
SHARING DUTIES: The EMU offense called on both young quarterbacks for significant action in last weekend's, Sept. 18, loss to Central Michigan. Sophomore Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) started and completed 12-of-20 passes for 148 yards and one touchdown pass while redshirt freshman Devontae Payne (Cleveland, Ohio-South) completed 13-of-24 passes for 134 yards. Gillett also rushed seven times for nine net yards while Payne had two rushes for two yards.
MOVING UP: Senior tailback Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union Academy) is moving up in several EMU career rushing categories. He has played in 34 games for the Eagles, earning 17 starts in the past four years. He has rushed 380 times for the 11th spot with 1,486 yards gained, 12th in history, and his 17 touchdowns, 15 by rush and two by reception, is tied for 15th.
NOT THAT COLUMBUS: EMU has two players from Columbus, but the town is located in Indiana, not Ohio. Sophomores Devon Davis (Columbus, Ind.-East) and Nick Olds (Columbus, Ind.-East) both played at East H.S.
