Senior wins first match in Sweet 16 competition

SKOKIE, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University golfer Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary), who graduated after the 2010 collegiate season, has come up with a hot hand here at the prestigious Western Amateur, Aug. 2-7, at the Skokie Country Club.

Burke and 2010 EMU senior teammate Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) both made the field of 156 to begin tournament stroke play, Aug. 2.

Burke was one of the top 52 players to qualify for the final 18 holes of stroke play after shooting 68-70=138, finishing in a tie for ninth, while Jeppesen missed advancing to that final round by one stroke after shooting 74-72=146.

In the final round of stroke play, Burke added a 70 for a three-round total of 210 to finish in a tie for seventh, advancing as one of the top 16 golfers into the match-play part of the tournament.

Burke squared off against University of Arkansas player Ethan Tracy in his first match and won, 1-up, to advance to the second round against Chan Kim, an amateur from Hawaii.

Kim ended Burke's dramatic run though with a victory to advance to meet the winner of the David Chung (Stanford)-Jeffrey Kang (Southern Cal) in the semifinals.
