Derek Thompson joins EMU after playing last year at Southeast Missouri State

YPSILANTI, Mich.- (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University men's basketball Head Coach Charles E. Ramsey has announced that Derek Thompson has joined the team as a transfer from Southeast Missouri State University (SEMO).

Thompson, a 6-foot-3, 185-pound guard is from Detroit and graduated from Melvindale High School, and prepped at Progressive Christian Academy in Washington, D.C. before playing as a freshman at SEMO in 2009-10.

"We are extremely excited to have Derek Thompson on our squad," Ramsey said. "He is a great young man and a gifted basketball player and will be a valuable addition to our program. I want to thank SEMO Head Coach Dicky Nutt for allowing Derek to transfer to be close to home. His family is facing some major health challenges and having Derek close to home will ease some of those burdens. We are petitioning the NCAA for a hardship waiver for Derek to become immediately eligible to play."

Thompson was a standout high school player for Melvindale, earning first-team All-State, All-District and All-Conference honors after averaging 25 points, seven rebounds and 11 assists as the Cardinals' top scorer.

After graduation from Melvindale, Thompson atttended prep school at Progressive Christian Academy, a school that produced eight Division I players and five of the nation's Top-100 prep school players in 2008-09. Thompson led his team in scoring with 27.3 points per game, while averaging 7.9 rebounds and 9.5 assists as a senior.

During the 2009-10 season, Thompson played in 29 games, starting four times, for the SEMO RedHawks. He was fifth on the team in scoring, at 8.4 points per game, and was second in three pointers made with 47. When EMU squared off against SEMO, Nov. 24, 2009 in Cape Girardeau, Mo., Thompson scored 15 points off the bench.
