Volleyball Team Picked Sixth in MAC West Division

Central Michigan and Ohio tabbed in preseason poll to win respective divisions

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team was picked to finish sixth in the West Division, according to the 2010 Mid-American Conference preseason poll. The poll is voted on by the head coaches and released by the conference office Friday morning.

The Green and White return 11 letterwinners from last year's squad, including four starters and the libero, along with welcoming two newcomers. Senior Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn) will lead the squad this year with the help of juniors Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) and Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) and sophomores Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) and Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child).

Central Michigan was also chosen to win the regular season and Ohio was picked to win the tournament title. The Chippewas have finished second in the West Division the last three seasons. CMU returns two All-MAC selections in 2010 in Lauren Krupsky and Kaitlyn Schultz.

Western Michigan was tabbed to finish second in the West Division after falling last season to Ohio in the MAC Tournament Championship match for the second year in a row. The Broncos return four letterwinners from last season's 24-win team that finished 13-3 in the MAC. Rounding out the West Division were Northern Illinois, Toledo, Ball State and Eastern Michigan.

Reigning MAC Champion Ohio is looking to make its eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament this season. The Bobcats return two All-MAC players in Sue Jacobi and Michelle Jantsch.

Miami was picked to finish second in the East Division after finishing second last season with a MAC record of 11-5. The RedHawks return two starters and a libero from last year's team. Closing out the East Division were Buffalo, Kent State, Bowling Green and Akron.

The 2010 volleyball season kicks off Aug. 27 with non-conference play and the MAC season begins Sept. 24.
